Working Nights

I have never had to work nights but i reckon i would adapt quite easily to the new pattern, but as people have stated the life of the person that has to be quiet in the house is drasticly changed as well as yours, which i can imagine would be quite annoying.

You will either love nights or hate them.
I have done different night shifts during my working life from:-
7 on 7 off 12hr nights
2 days 2 nights (4 off) 12hr shifts
Reg. 4 on 4 off 12hr nights.
Now I do 4 weeks Mon-Thurs 12hr nights then 4 weeks Fri-Sun 12hr nights.

When I was younger I loved nights as I didn't need much kip, but now I tend to get about 6 hrs a day. Worst thing is trying to get back into a regular shift pattern after you have finished your last night shift, I often play golf straight after work and then have 2-3 hrs in the afternoon. Can then drop off at about the same time as the bride that night after a couple of tinnies ;)

I have been working nights for 9 years. I started doing 6 nights a week, 11 until 6, and now work 10:30 until 0630 for 5 days a week.

To be honest I prefer night work, but have seen a lot of people suffering from stress and other illnesses because their body could not cope with the change. You do need to get up and get out just to get some sunlight. The winter months are the worst, going to work in the dark and getting home when its dark, I only probably see about 2 hours daylight in the winter months. If you work nights, any form of a social life will be non existent.

The law (taken from the DTI website) also states the following rights:
The basic rights and protections that the Regulations provide are:
• a limit of an average of 48 hours a week which a worker can be required to work (though workers can choose to work more if they want to).
• a limit of an average of 8 hours work in 24 which nightworkers can be required to work.
• a right for night workers to receive free health assessments.
• a right to 11 hours rest a day.
• a right to a day off each week.
• a right to an in-work rest break if the working day is longer than 6 hours.
• a right to 4 weeks paid leave per year.

You are also entitled to a free health assessment before assignment to night work and thereafter at regular intervals.

I worked nights for 3 months. Don't do it. Besides trashing your social life it isn't healthy. I didn't appreciate rolling in from work at 8am to watch Kell_ee001 leave for work either. That sucked. I presume (read hope ;)) she didn't like it much either.

what do you guys think of a 6am-2pm and 2pm-10pm shift pattern?

did it for a few weeks and i hated it, but the company and co workers couldent understand why :(

It depends on the person.

I worked nights for a few months one summer and loved it - being able to get up in the afternoon and do what you wanted? The grind of finishing work just when everything is shutting is soul destroying.

I wasn't at all tired and on my off days I pretty much stayed in the same pattern, maybe getting to bed a couple of hours earlier.

I don't suffer from jetlag, it hurts me physically (bad guts) to get up at 6am and I'm happiest going to bed after 2am - all characteristics of an extreme night owl type. If you are an early bird type don't do nights, you'll hate it.

For illustration without an alarm clock I'd never get up before 10am and usually not before noon, regardless of what time I'd gone to bed.
