The international jury of the 49th annual World Press Photo contest selected a color image of the Canadian photographer Finbarr O'Reilly of Reuters as World Press Photo of the Year 2005. The picture shows the emaciated fingers of a one-year-old child pressed against the lips of his mother at an emergency feeding clinic in Niger. A devastating swarm of locusts and the worst drought in decades left millions of people short of food in the African state. The picture was taken in Tahoua, northwestern Niger, on 1 August 2005.

On a similar theme, last year I went to an exibition called 'Five Thousand Days' and the pictures were absolutly astounding, with a lot of the images being of similar nature to the ones shown at this link.
I also bought the book of the same title, which is basically every World news item picture for the last five thousand days - I would urge everyone to check it out - I promise you the pictures are totally amazing as well as shocking

Can't any happy related photo win? Sheesh.

without wishing to go off topic i do have to agree, while the photos are simply amazing at telling the terrible story and opening the world to the plight of the particular people involved - it seems a little devoid of sense to have somebody awarded for being there only to be able to come home and get congratulated for it... not that i blame the journalist but i mean isnt it a little socially irresponsible? damn i personally would want the proceeds to go to the affected people - to be priviledged enough to get paid to shoot is reward but to be lavished for it ... strange world at time eh!
