Does anyone know many units the PS2 sold in its first yr?

I see the PS3 has only managed to sell a paltry 6million in its first. Hardly suprising considering its expensive price tag and slow start off with games.

Also another interesting point is the 360 has sold 13mil.. But what of the 40% returns? How many of that 13mil is people buying their 2nd or 3rd console after receiving a refund for their original console.. Like me for example. I'm on my 3rd or is it 4th?? I can't remember,,, Well anyway when any of them have stopped working, I take them back to the store they give me a refund there and then and I go pick up a replacement there and then...

The real winner here is obviously the Wii with 13mil worldwide sales and hardly any returns. I'd be interested to see how that tallys up against the original PS2 which has gone on to sell 120mil worldwide.

i) 360 sales are retail sales so returns aren't counted.
ii) From the Sony/MS/Nintendo eoy financial reports the worldwide sales as of September 30th 2007 are:

Wii: 13.17
Xbox 360: 13.4 million
PlayStation 3: 5.59 million

iii) PS2 shipments first year were c.10m though it was only on sale in Japan for the first 6 months.

The original PS2 sold just under 7 million in its first year, so the Wii is doing much better but im not sure if the Wii has the legs to keeps selling as well as the PS2 has over the last 7. Thing is the PS2 sold 7 million in its first year and then went on to sell nearly 16 million in the year after and approx 20 million the year after that! So after a slowish start, it gained momentum in its 2nd and third year when the bigger games came out and after a price reduction, sound familliar? At the moment the PS3 is doing slightly better than the 360's first year and has yet have to have a christmas/ holiday sales for the Pal regions.
With regards to the 360 returns you cant say that 30% of that figure say are down to faulty units, some people have gone out and got another 360 but i would thought most would have just got it fixed under warranty. I still cant see one console dominating like the PS1/PS2 did, which is a good thing a monopoly isnt good for anyone, give it another year at least before you get the full picture regarding sales, come the end of 2008 i see the 360/PS3 being only a couple of million difference, with the 360 being top dog in the states and the PS3 bigger sales in the R.O.W, the Wii will still be in front but i see it being so not by much.

Well the thing is in the USA returns are done differently than over in the UK.. People always get a 'cash' refund then they go and pull one off the shelf.. So there's no association with the return... It's the way the states is with customer service. AND being that a good portion of worldwide sales are in the US, then I think its fair to say the total worldwide sales of the 360 is somewhat mis-guided.

Are you sure that is how it is done in the USA? I have not heard this before, but if that is the case, that would artificially inflate the figures (through the fault of the retailer I guess, as opposed to Microsoft).

Come to think about it when I swapped mine (in UK) I got a receipt that said "1 x XBOX 360 cost £0.00". But I would not think this counts as another retail sale. If it does then the way of measuring these things is flawed.

Yup and it's open to abuse too. Believe you me, I live here and take full advantage....:D They are soooooo big on pleasing the customer over here they'll happily take a punch or two. Not sure about GameStop but the biggies such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy do not even flutter an eyelid before handing over the readies..

If the 360 sales are artificially inflated how would one explain the massive lead in software sales (more than Wii/PS3/PS2 software sales combined).

If it is the case, then the simple way to judge 'true' sales would be to simply subtract the percentage fail rate from the given figure.
I think?

But even the it would be a big guestimate.. I mean country to country it's going to be different. Some people are also lazy and just go give me another one please. They'd be stupid cos taking the cash and going to get a new one ALWAYS gives you a new 12month warranty.

I reckon 15% of the worldwide retail sales are probably returns.

Well that's easy.. The 360 is the only system that has games worth buying at the moment..:D
