Worried about my computer, what is the problem?

Recently my computer has been shutting down recently, and I don't know the cause, however I can explain some basic symptoms hoping someone has had similar ones.

Basically, it will shut down when CPU is pretty much idle. It has never shut down in stressful situations which is when you'd guess it would.

When it shuts down, and I try to turn it on. The power LED will continually light up and then the glow will slowly go away, then light up again, this repeats, as if it's constantly powering up and down.

If I look closer, none of the fans are actually spinning, and I think I can hear a repeating power up/power down noise from the PSU.

I have an Asus Rampage III Extreme and if I look at the lights that show the progress of the boot, it doesn't get beyond CPU. These lights are there to show you where the boot is having a problem (DRAM, CPU, GPU).

This leads me to think, it's either the CPU, PSU or Mobo. If it's the motherboard, those lights showing me what's failing the boot could be faulty and unreliable.

Usually I will have to wait about 10-40 minutes to power it on again and it's getting worse, if it continues this way I might not be able to turn it on again. ):

Anyone know what problem I could be having?

Yup, sounds like a bad PSU. Definitely check there's nothing silly like a power cable loose or something shorting somewhere, but otherwise backup anything important ASAP and get a new PSU.

My week old build started to shut down last night, thought it was the GPU overclock so I ran on standard, my son played on it all day today with no problems.

I turned it on earlier and it was resetting then would only boot to safe mode.

Anyway after searching the web for a few hours it turned out to be caused by an update from AVG on W7 64bit, WTF!

The file in question was AVGIDSEH.SYS, which will show as the last loaded driver if you check the bootlog after a failed boot.

Theres a fix on AVG's site.

Thanks but I don't use AVG so it wouldn't be the cause (:
