Worrying i7 Temps

Please help. Firstly, I'm not a hardware expert so go easy on me..

Stats:

Core i7 920 / 2.66Ghz not overlocked
Asus P6T Deluxe
XFX 280 GTX

Built this rig last year. All was fine, noticed a few crashes recently and checked the usual stats. I noticed the CPU (Core i7 920 @ 2.66Ghz) was showing 55-60C when *IDLE*. I was using the stock cooler.

Today my Akasa AK-967 Nero arrived. I put on the paste, and installed it fine. CPU now shows 50-55C when idle. General system temp is also around 60C according to the BIOS.

This seems exceptionally high to me. Room temp isn't really all that hot, and I've got 4 case fans too. The crucial thing is, it WASN'T this hot when I first built it.. I got 30-35C when idle back then.

What could be causing this?? I know the GPU runs hot (XFX 280GTX) but even so...

At stock clocks those temps are definately high. What load temps are you getting? Also, what is your vcore set at in the bios?

Sorry, I'm a bit of a dunce here. I took a pic of my entire CPU BIOS settings though...

can you get a shot of HWmonitor when idle and when stressing, will give us an idea of what auto is setting your voltages to.
I think the main thing to consider is getting a decent cooler, i take it as you are running stock that it was a pre built system (no offence intended if it wasn't), what space have you got for a cooler.
For some reason Intel shipped the i7 with a barely adequate cooler and the Akasa isn't much better.

Edit: sorry have just seen the CPU voltage, tbh i would be aiming to get load voltages at the temp you are at idle, this is going to be an airflow (well lack of) problem.

The QPI voltage is way to high drop it down to about 1.25V, seems strange the only 2 voltages not on auto is that and the RAM. Keep the RAM on 1.66.
By the looks of it you are using an Asus board is it a P6T which one? i have owned a few and will be able to help you with the Bios settings if you want, might be able to drop the mobo temp a bit by coming of of Auto as sometimes the voltages set themselves to high.

XMP does seem to set qpi very high, on my p6t deluxe v2, for a 4ghz overclock i use the following voltages on my p6t dlx v2 board.

vcore, 1.2750
qpi, 1.3125
pll, 1.84
dram, 1.64
ioh, 1.200
ich, 1.200

All theese are well below safe limits, and aside from vcore will be fine even on a stock system, youd be best setting manual voltages where possible.

Turn off the XMP and run your memory at stock settings for the CPU, with the XMP profile both your QPI bus and memory controller are overvolted so that you can run 1600mhz memory (i7 only supports 1066mhz at stock afaik).

Well I've left everything on auto, admittedly. But when I first built it I was getting temps of 30-35C when idle.

Heres a sceen from HWMonitor...

I was trying this but it made no difference to temp what so ever.

mm 1.2Vcore is a bit high for stock, try setting it to 1.12Vcore ish in your bios should knock about 5-10C off of temps (hopefully)

Also your getting a change of between 20-15 C between idle and stressed which isnt to bad tbh.

So it seems your idle temps are way to high, this could be due to a few things, the seating of your cooler, the paste used (can make upto 10C difference between glue, that some supply :) to something decent like MX-3).
Also set your CPU fan to run at full instead of letting your mobo control it, it may be a bit noisy but report back with the temps.

edit i just noticed your CPu is pulling 150W, seems strange that mine only goes upto 130W when overclocked is your chip a C1?

Cpuz also reports mine at 150w, chip is an i7 920 do, currently at stock, ran a quick blast of p95 and 150w displayed in hwmonitor.

Q-Fan is off and I dont see any other options so I presume thats already set. Failing trying to re-seat the heatsink and turning off XMP, there doesnt seem much else left to try?

as the temps have suddenly risen, have you given the case a good blow with a can of compressed air...can work wonders

As mentioned before, deffo try reseating your cooler as if your where getting 30c+ idle with stock cooler it has to be the mounting of the new one imo.

You will be able to run your ram at 1.64v i'd say on that mobo to help lower the volts when stressing as its getting up to 1.69 which is quite high.
