I've recently been asked to have a look at a few problems on a PC for a client and upon looking at the PC I thought I'd check the CPU and RAM spec and to put it one way... I was shocked!

The PC has 8gb RAM but was only running a 32bit operating system! I asked about this and apparently he bought the PC specifically with 8gb of RAM, surely the company he bought it off (a reputable one at that) would have known to install a 64bit operating system to utilise it...

It may have been a stupid blunder on the system builders behalf but at the same time it worries me how many people are being sold systems that they are not truly getting.

Oh it wasn't the purple shirt place before you ask, It was quite well known company who provide customer builds on request though so I would have thought better of them.

I can feel a spec savers style "Should have gone to OcUK" coming on lol

Has anyone else ever come across this when working on other peoples PCs?

The trouble is if they'd only stuck 4GB in it they might have lost sales to other 8gb/32bit systems, at least it's future proof.

maybe he customed it do 8gb and left the OS as 32bit?

Apparently he was told that they will put an "appropriate" OS on there

I have a feeling the builder knew a 64 bit os was really needed but either:
A) There were no copies of vista x64 available when building and knew the customer would never realise that it is necessary to use all of his RAM
B) He/She screwed up and accidentally installed a 32bit OS
C) Couldn't be bothered faffing with an x64 setup knowing that there was a possibility the customer would complain that something won't install or run due to being 64 bit

It just annoys me that a reputable company would do this. Can you imagine if OcUK built a brand new i7 setup with 12gb RAM but just installed a 32bit OS?
