WORSE performance with crossfire??

does clear sky work with xfire? the combination of slower pci (16x -> 8x) and lower clocks could cause that fps drop if xfire isn't actually doing anything, and only one card is taking the load. and a CPU bottleneck might also be an issue somewhere.

just throwing out ideas, don't actually have experience with any game mentioned :D

1) Reset all settings to default in CCC, then completely uninstall ATI drivers

2) Shut down

3) reseat both cards making sure both are absolutely in correctly - don't like when you say one sticks out at one end. Just doesn't sound right at all.

4) Stick on 2nd crossfire bridge

5) Start PC, runnig at stock

6) Isntall DX February update - this recently made a huge difference for me, though with single rather than dual cards. found here

7) Restart

8) Install Cat 10.2's

9) Restart

10) Test something, without playing with any settings in CCC

all im saying is i had a problem with my gigx38 board that my second slot would only run in 4x and i know that the x38 and x48 are the same board,so that could be the problem.BTW the gig x38 and x48 should run 16/16x

ffallic, thanks for the tips, will try them now. I did have the feb redist installed last week on my old HDD, forgot to grab it again.

GPU-Z reports both cards are running at 16x. To be honest I don't believe it but not sure how else to check.

Cheers guys. :D

My cards are now stomping everything in their path. Clocking them as I type this, will need to get hold of another waterblock soon though. Sooooon...

Xfire 5850's are one of the set-ups I am considering, will decide in a month or so. Or maybe I should just buy a bigger case, taken out the q6600 and pop a in a better clocker before buying two of these bad boys. :)

This video, an Eyefinity demo of Grand Theft Auto 4, is quite informative. The host says that his PC has 2 5970s. However, GTA4 can only use 1 GPU at a time, essentially turning his 2x 5970 setup into a 5850 single card. Looks like there are quite a few such Crossfire issues.

The vid is a tad long, if you want to skip to where he is talking about the technical mumbo jumbo, go to 2:50 (min:sec).

Whoops!

At least it was fixed.
By the way, leave Catalyst AI to Standard unless you need Advanced.

IIRC in crossfire, setting to Advanced *FORCES* AFR rendering mode, there are several others, so by forcing AFR you may be forcing games to run outside of the optimal configuration and losing performance.
