i have been having the worst connection i have ever had the last few days and io have no clue as to why.

I notice it mostly when trying to play BF2, it can take ages to sign in, sometimes it doesn't, then if i sign in it can load a game but straight away i loose my connection to the server, or just get the worst lag ever whilst palying the get kicked from server.

Also i can be noticable when just surfing the net, like checking hotmail can be slow sometimes and then be fine. I know my brother was usinsg some Azarus i think its caled download thing, which i thought was it at first but i still get the problem even when thats not on.

I have run ad-aware and spybot thinking maybe i had loads of spyware or something but that comes back with nothing.

i can be talking on skype and my connection just goes, though it takes a few moments to tel me, and i have to unplug replug the network cable

I am on a home network with 5 other computers. ISP is NTL. I tihnk its 10mb one we got, its like one of there best ones so im sure that wouldn't be the problem

Can anyone reccomend anything i can do to try and sort this? Like there was a interent speed tested once before posted here but i cant remeber it. Also any software i can try to see if its my pc or the interent such as hijack this? (dont know what that does, provides a lot of information thought someone would see the problem from that?)

make 100% sure that you're not running any file sharing programs on your pc, unplug the rest of the pcs


now is it ok?

its likely that one or more people are using torrent or ed2k file sharing programs


the best way to do filesharing in a networked house is have one pc with utorrent on it, and get everyone to use that for it
 
got utorrent, changed some stuff e.g changed to static ip on my pc but can't do some of the pcs, isthat a problem?

dont understand what utorrent does though?

also i found out that my mum and older brother is having the same problem
 
lol sounds to me your brother may be downloading a lot of stuff.

utorrent is a bit torrent app mate.

Its mostly used for getting illegal stuff but does have legitimate use's as well.

You can use it to download anything from demos to movies to full games.

If any bit torrent program isnt setup correctly it can have the effects you have described which would bring even a 10mb connection to its knees.

all you need to do is make sure you limit his upload speed to 20k, this will still allow him to download at decent speeds, but it wont then cripple your net experieance.

Or if your feeling nasty get your mum to rollock him and stop him using it full stop. think he may hate you for doing that though.


Best bet is just check its configured ok.

edit, why have you got utorrent, if you dont know what its for dont bother with it.

Do as suggested unplug all pc's and then test your connection.

if your brother is using torrents do what i said at the top lol
 
well the guy suggested it, thought that it was some software that sorts of limits etc to each person and does it well lol guess i was wrong.

Well it did do good as far as i can tell as it told me how to change me IP to static IP and it seems to be all good so far. Will try and do this on as many PC's as im allowed.

I can't unplug the net on the other peoples computer as they would flip and may be downloading as far as i know.

Anyways thanks to everyone who has conributed. Will post back if problems persists

you thought utorrent was a program that is used for limiting your internet connection?
 
P2P and Games playing don't mix, if anyone is running P2P on the same connection as you then everyone else will suffer and you will get exacty the symptoms you describe, torrent apps are very good at saturating your uplink thus killing other network traffics unless you limit them or have QOS or similar on your router.

Datamonkey - Not sure about generalising that Torrent software is mostly used for illegal dowloads ? You'll be telling me that computers in general or Internet Explorer is mostly used for pr0n next.. Oh hang on it's down to the user...
