anyone bothered to do this, if so was it worth it for the end results ?
Obviously this applies to gaming laptops mostly.

I've never done it but I can imagine its beneficial to clean out inside of dust and reapply paste for better heat conductivity to increase life :)

Depends how easy it is to get to the heatsink - some of the dell laptops I see are only a few months old and are choked with dust, so if you can clean it easily then go for it. It does reduce temps and fan noise. I fixed two dells today with early GPU failure and both had heatsinks completely blocked with dust - coincidence? Note that some laptops use heat pads instead of grease so don't damage them when you remove the heatsink unless you have replacement pads ready - the gap between the heatsink and the relevant chip are too large to bridge with grease....

Ah never thought about the 'gap'. thanks for that.
But ! ;)

Whilst I am confident to strip my laptop (if I must), I would prefer not to do so as its only a couple of weeks old.
Do you happen to know if the HSF is a flush fit on the Dell 1749 (core i5/ ati5650) by any chance?
