Worth an upgrade on my current rig?

Title says it all really... I'm currently running a single core Athlon 64 on an AX8 motherboard (VIA chipset), and contemplating spending a small amount of cash on 2GB of additional DDR1 RAM, bringing me to 3GB.

Would it be worth it on this kit though? My motherboard manual says unless the RAM is single-sided I'll only get single channel if I use more than two slots. So my options are:

1) Upgrade to 3GB and make do with single channel.
2) Replace my existing modules and have 2GB in dual channel.
3) Don't bother.

It'll be a good few months before I'm in a position to do a full upgrade, and what I'll probably end up doing is building a whole new PC instead, and keeping this one as a secondary system.

2GB is optimal for this system, no point in getting more.
You could get better GPU (2nd hand 3870xt/8800gt) instead or swap the CPU for second hand x2, they go around for about 20-30quid.

Ahh yes. A good old "Search" and I've found that you need 250 posts. So I guess I'll probably have access by the end of the day. :)

Anybody else have any thoughts about whether I should bother with an upgrade, or should I perhaps just wait a month or so and get a second hand Socket AM2 board, CPU and some dirt-cheap DDR2?

The above would remain my second machine, with a full new system being built as my main one.
