Worth buying anti-virus software?

I have always used free Anti virus software, like AVG, Avast and countless others. As well as free Firewall software such as Comodo.

I'm considering buying BitDefender 2010 AV + Firewall though, £29.99 per year. But what are the advantages over FREE software?

Thinking about security for my new Windows 7 system.
