Worth buying?

Hi I'm currently running an X2 6000+ (90nm), with a very slight Oc to 3.15Ghz,
I'm currently wondering if it's worth seeking to upgrade with an X4 9950 as my board supports it.

I've heard that they can often be easily oc to ~3Ghz by just upping the multi to x15.

But will I stand to have a worthwhile gain?
Is my gaming performance likely to benefit?

I'm fairly sure that my 4870X2 is being held back to some degree due to my frames dipping in games (min 27fps on FC2 benchmark 1280*1024 Ultra settings 2x AA)

Your opinions gladly received.
Thanks
Ash

PS I'm not looking to switch to an Intel chip, as I've fairly recently paid out for the gfx card so my available funds aren't up to that

the quad cores dont make any difference to games at the moment, only encoding will you see the benefit of that. worth sticking with the slightly faster clock on the 2 cores for games

I would be hanging on to see if Deneb turns out to be as good as we all hope it is. Providing it will fit in your board that is.

***Edit*** Just noticed you have a 4870x2 in which case you really need a quad to make the most of it. Have a read of this.

Yea, that's what I was thinking.

I was fairly sure that the 4870X2 was being held back by the X2 CPU

Thanks for the link, though it would be nice to see the tests done again with the newer cats including the x2 hotfix.

They can only make things better though. :D It's rare for a new driver to actually make things worse.

I think the upgrade would be a good one. Maybe all games might not respond to all cores but your system overall performance will for sure.

Since the 9950 is pretty cheap i would say its a good upgrade for your system. Just maybe not for your games.

Cool, thanks
I've taken the plunge and ordered a shiney new X4 9950.

Just looking forward to its arrival now so I can pull my rig apart and pop it in.

According to this site, the code on my chip means I have received a 125W chip, I guess this means it'll run a little cooler.

Will it oc ok?
Should I be a happy bunny?

It'll only be air cooled for the time being, I'll be happy with ~3Ghz to begin with, but ideally I'd like to squeeze a little more. The M3A79-T Deluxe, I believe, is up to the job.

:(

I'm struggling to get this clocking properly, I'm sure it's my fault (limited knowledge).

I must be missing something in the Bios because I just cant seem to get it running stable.
it's current at 2.8Ghz (200*14) with 1.35V.

Please can someone give me some tips for what to do.
Thanks
