I have a DIY NAS running Windows Server as the OS. I'm planning on upgrading to a newer 1u server, but is it worth my while changing the OS to TrueNAS? The only thing this server does is stream 4K movies to six or so TVs.

Both seem overkill just to stream a few movies.

What 1U hardware is it? If it's a oem server (HPE/Dell/etc) with hardware RAID, then that's perhaps the only time Windows Server makes sense (although linux should have the same support).

If it's a self build then Unraid is a more suitable choice in most situations - TrueNAS is generally only if you absolutely need the data protection that ZFS offers (and can accept it's limitations)

Oh it's very much overkill but a free server license is a free license :)

The 1u is a Lenovo SR250. It currently has a hardware raid card but can be replaced with a HBA if I go down the TrueNAS route. I can go months without logging on to the server some times because it just works. I think I'm curious about TrueNAS but also mindful I'm making a load of work for myself for no good reason.
