I have a phemon ii dual core unlocked to quad and at 3.6 ghz i use my computer mostly for games and high power ones like arma 2 metro etc would it be worth upgrading my cpu mother board and memory to a i7 or new sandy bridge , will it really give me a big boost in game performance compared to my phenom? Or would a 6 core phenom be a better bet?

Why not just go for a quad core Phenom 2 CPU? The sweetspot for gaming is 3 cores so 6 is overkill at the moment and I can't really see the point in changing platform completely.

6 cores aren't really being used. You don't mention your GPU, so it makes it a bit harder to judge.

On my current Q6600 @ 3GHZ I'm 100 percent being held back on some games on my 480. My FPS makes no difference even with AA / AF on or off. Some games like GTA 4 100 percent like more CPU power. I did the built in benchmark, and at stock I got 37FPS, my card overclocked I got like .4FPS higher! :P (within the margin of error!).

I'm upgrading to a sandy bridge, but whether you should, you'll get different opinions! Up to you really....

Ah my gpu is a 580 gtx or will be soon oother probem is i am getting 3 d vision so my amd mobo wont support sli only one pci ex. Slot so if i want dual cards i am duffed so i though hang it all and upgrade as no amd borads support sli
