Worth doing pass plus after a year of driving?

Last year when I was 17 and passed my test, I didn't bother doing pass plus as the only company who would insure me on my car for a semi-reasonable price didn't offer discount for pass-plus.

Now a year later, insurance is up for renewal soon, I will have 1 years ncb and I will be waiting that extra 2 months till I'm 19 as this makes quite a difference and I'm not so reliant on my car anymore. Now my question is, does pass plus give any benefit with no claims discount? I believe I can still do it up till a year after passing my test. Most companies say ring up for pass-plus discounts, but I'm not at that stage yet so I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience on this matter? I am looking at high-ish grouping cars (CTR, LCR, 172 etc.) so will be paying a fair wack anyway if this makes a difference.

Cheers

Goddam i wish i got all those dam fee O2 sims and sold them ;)

So long as you do it within the year you should be fine and get a nice discount, especially on the more powerfull cars, or so i hope :(

Just wondering whether in conjunction with the 1ncb (touch-wood) it will make any difference, I'm not one of these named driver types y'know :p

Yeah but is it cheaper to fork out for the extra premium for a couple years than it is the buy a bunch of PP lessons? That is the question... ;)

. . . and the answer is definitely not to do Pass Plus then never tell the insurance company. Not that anyone would ever do that . . . . . :(

You *do not* only have a year to do your pass plus after passing your test.

I did my pass plus last easter, after 3 1/2 years of driving. A friend is a driving instructor, and showed me the relevant bit of paper re: pass plus. It's copied on their website:

http://www.dsa.gov.uk/Category.asp?cat=242 - about halfway down, it says "anybody with a full UK licence is eligible. There are no time limits after passing your test, it just seems the discount is greatest within the first year.

I only got a few quid off my policy since I already had 3 years NCD, but I did glean a couple of good general driving tips, and got a ridiculous number of "exceeded" marks, which was good for the ego!

Would usually make a difference with some insurance companies as the government subsidies pass plus discount to encourage drivers & insurers.
But, wont make any difference to the cars your looking at...CTR, LCR, Clio etc - no-one will touch you, ncb or 0ncb. If they do you'll be daft to take the quote imo.

You tried getting quotes for the CTR?

I know for a fact that Elephant.co.uk/bell.co.uk & Admiral wont let anyone under the age of 21 insure a CTR.

If you find somewhere please let me know!

I know for a fact that they do, as i have just done an online quote with Diamond who are part of the admiral group.

Its obviously a rather crap quote (£1900comp - lol) but they will insure a 2001 on Civic Type R with no quibbles.

Details: 20, 1NCB, No convictions, car value £10k (guess)

I live in pretty much the lowest postcode risk with the car garaged so this helps with the quotes. Had a few quotes for around £2000 - £2500 fully comp at 19 with 1ncb on those cars which beats my current £2100 third party on a saxo doesnt it! This is not a discussion on whether I can insure those particular models, I can because I don't mind paying fairly stupid prices on insurance. So just wondering how much difference it is going to make doing pass plus, iirc its 6 lessons at the regular rate isn't it? Because I have already done 3 after I passed my test as I wanted to do a bit of extra night time and motorway driving.

IME it'll make absolutely bugger all difference mate, i really, really wouldnt bother.

I assume you are going to be using one of the admiral group of insurers?

A car to throw into the works, what about a Focus RS? Much cheaper to insure than a Civic Type R by the looks of things (i am messing about on diamond's quoter), its coming out at £1600comp for me, compared with £1900comp for the CTR, using same details, therefore that price difference should transfer to anyone's quote. :) Better car too.

Yes one of the admiral group, but Focus RS can't be bought for £9k can they ;)

No, they are not, why does everyone think this? They have gender selection just like EVERY insurance company has to. :)
