What's the general take on folding on a laptop??

Got a Mobile Core 2 Duo T5270 (1.4ghz) with 1 gb of ram here at work. Works laptop could be left on 24/7 if needed but is it worth while folding on??

Win Smp or just ordinary units or not bother??

Trying to get away from me properly ey :p?

I used to fold macSMP on my MacBook Pro, but for the amount of heat it put out it really wasn't worth it. I ended up having to run the fans on a higher speed all of the time and it really didn't do them any good, as they definitely sound more whiney now.

in my experience it definatly is not worth it, while you might get a few thousand points a week you cant really use it while your folding due to the heat mainly. also the performance on mine was degraded even after i stoped

I folded on an iBook G4 once and it was pretty close to the definition of pointless.

Folding on laptops is usually a bit more power efficient than a desktop but the excess heat, noise, and the fact laptops aren't really designed to be run 24/7 make them bad folders.

For what it's worth I reckon you'd get about 500ppd from the laptop.

i run seti@home 24/7 on my laptop (a core duo 1.66 gig), its well worth it in terms of points. it used to have issues with heat and the fan spinning up and down, but i opened mine up and reseated the heatsink/fan using some proper heat transfer compound and it now runs fine and the fan doesn't speed up.

i'd say give it a go for a bit and see, would be worth it i guess if it can make the smp deadlines.

It'll get 600-700ppd with the right WUs. It'll also make lots of noise and get dead hot, so it won't be very pleasant to use whilst Folding, and I daresay it will die more quickly.
