What is your system used for?
lets assume gaming, any ram over 1600Mhz will show no real world gain in gaming so get any speed you want you will feel 0 deference.
8gb to 16gb for gaming, again if you not running low of memory in games you will feel 0 deference.
if building a new system only buy 16gb, but if upgrading if down to do you feel the need for more ram.
Depends how long you want to keep the platform for I guess?
ATM, 8GB is ok. But in 3 years time? Probably not. 5 years time? not a chance! I've had a look in my crystal ball, and I think DDR3 prices are probably about as low as they are going to get. I think they will probably go up soon like we saw with DDR2 once DDR3 was mainstream.
I'd probably aim for some relatively fast RAM if it were me. fast ram might only give you 1 or 2% on most games, but you probably spent well over a grand on your PC right? so an extra £5-£10 on some decent RAM isnt exactly a bad deal in the grand scheme of things to me... + It will cover you for those few games where RAM speed actually makes a difference.
With ddr3 1333 to 1600 shows a big step, then going over 1600 shows minimal to no performance gains.
With ddr4 its around 2666Mhz that right now your getting to the top of where you need to be
