Worth getting 6850k??

I will take a good care of it :)

I'll put it up for sale shortly along with the MB in the MM section, once the X299 and X399 reviews have been released. However, going back on to topic, I would highly advise against upgrading to a X99 platform as it doesn't have a upgrade path, I've also found it personally to be unstable and that's coming from my old X79 which was rock solid. That's even after testing a number of ram modules and changing the PSU etc...

If I was looking at a 6 core CPU option now, I would ether buy a AMD Ryzen R5 1600X or wait for the Coffee Lake Platform which should be due later this year. As both options then will give you upgrade options going forward and you could ague that the AMD will have the better upgrade path going forward as well. However, that's one to make you own choice on.

Is it worth me getting a 6850k or wait for 6 core Coffee Lake?

Running a 4930k at 4.2 now

Anything is upgrade from 4930K. But imho no, ain't worth to get the 6850K. Wait for X399 platform pricing and check the 10/12 core parts.

X99 can be upgraded to a ten core i7 or 18 core Xeon so lots of potential for upgrades. My X99 has been rock solid. I would wait for Threadripper as it should affect prices and if you don’t need the extra RAM/PCI-E capacity the Ryzen chips offer the best value.

By upgrade path I meant to the latest and greatest CPU's, plus I also wouldn't want to be paying a simlar price to the current line CPU's. I'd also recommend waiting on TR but the OP was specifying an 6850K 6 core CPU and at which point i'd recommend a 1600X or wait on Coffee Lake.

For anyone already on x99 i don't see a point upgrading to anything I've seen so far, because it's hardly an upgrade unless you need more cores. Though at this point i would wait and see what Coffeelake is like first, don't get a 6850k now.

CL is only 6 Cores Correct?

CL is only 6 Cores Correct?
Supposed to be, but some people like to whine about having the newest CPU i think :p i guess it doesn't matter much since both platforms are pretty much dead ends for upgrades anyway.

Only reason i can see to change to Coffeelake would be for better IPC, and i can see that being a rather small increase again, if any? With a bit better overclocking potential, possibly.

For the same price you could get a AMD 8 core 16 thread CPU and they are getting more optimized all the time.

I'm very happy with my 5820k.
Its still more cpu than I need.

But I wouldn't buy x99 now.
You will get longer life from the latest sockets.
Same.

Rsr maybe your voltage setup was dodgey above if you had instabilty, I have like 200 chrome tabs open and ideling 10 steam games for the cards, comps still like come at me bro :-P

It's stable now but it seems to be linked to memory speeds and BIOS versions. I do get the odd crash now and again, which is weird as I can leave the bench marking application running for ages and they all pass without problem. It's streaming and gaming are when I have noticed it the most.

I guess a newer bios might help, it's always been said x99 didn't benefit from memory speeds due to being quad channel, I've pushed my memory a bit and cannot say I've noticed a difference, also having 64GB i can never fill it either :)
