Im selling my 8800GT (in the MM) and im looking at what to get next, and i feel like a change from Nvidia. Im thinking of getting a 4850, as its apparently more powerfull and has uses the memory onboard more efficiently (should be good for 1920x1200). Id also like to see what AMD/ATI are like as i havent used them since the 9600 Pro. What do you guys think, worth it (The gainward one with grid seems tasty) ? Also, are the prices at what they should be now or are they still a bit higher than they should ?

The Gainward 4850 is a great card, very happy, but i do think for that res a 4870 is a better option. Having said that the 4850 is still a nice upgrade from the 8800GT.

Ive just ordered the gainward to replace a 8800GT, but my gaming res is 1680x1050

if i gamed at a higher res id have probably had gone for the 4870 tbh

What the point of upgrading from a 8800GT to a 4850? You're looking at a incremental improvment really. If you want a proper improvement at 1920x1200 then get the 4870 or the nVidia equivalent. Otherwise the search function and google are your friends, this topic has been discussed numerous times and many benchmarks are available. Good luck.

55nm GTX could indeed be a nice alternative.

The cooling solution (no exhaust) on the 4850 isn't great, however as people are still managing to get £60+ for old 8800GTs, an upgrade to a 4850 would be really quite cheap.

I'd prefer the 4870 myself though, if on a budget.

it depends how much you like AA and AF. The different is MUCH more than incremental. 8x AA + 16x AF was nearly unplayable on a voltmodded 8800GTS 512mb for me, the 4850 does the same settings with almost no performance hit.

Not to mention GRID....it's playable even with 24x CSAA

of course the 55nm GTX 260 could also be a nice alternative if you want to spend a little more.

You originally quoted:

wouldnt get 4850 to replace a 8800GT because the difference isnt as great as people lead on.

saying that new drivers would increase the 4800 series performance... but theres also new drivers coming that will increase performance for the G92 based GPUs such as the 8800GT... so things may not change that much or the gap could even close somewhat.

To be honest im not really after a big performance jump, its mainly as a nice lil upgrade, to see what ATI are like, and bag a copy of GRID at the same time :) My 8800GT seemed to handle pretty much every game fine at 1920x1200 (bar Crysis, unless i ran it on medium). Its probs more of a tech geek thing that i want to see *** ATI are like.
