Worth getting an 8800 GTX?

I am using a C2D @ 3GHZ, 2GB of ram, and blah blah.

My current GPU is an 8800 GTS 320MB, but am thinking of getting the rather lovely 8800 GTX OC UK GPU. (how is that for abbrieviations ;))

Anyways, I am trying to decide if it is worth it, currently am using a 20" dell widescreen (so obviously 1680x1050) but maybe in the future (soonish) am thinking of getting a 24" monitor to replace my second 20" monitor. (so I have a 24" dell and a 20" dell).

What do people think? or is it better to get the Monitor first? I guess I could game at the same res, and just enjoy the extra space for Photoshop/work and when I watch movies and stuff (I use my PC for a DVD player too).

Anyone have any thoughts?

Your GTS will probably struggle over 1680x1050 but this is the buy 8800gtx now or wait a few months for an unknown but possibly better card debate.
No easy answer im afraid.

Personally i would wait as i think the gts will see you through to
the new nvidia release. The gtx is a step up but i wouldn't say a massive
step especially if you stick a nice overclock on that gts. Also the new
nvidia card if the rumours are true is gonna be a beastly card and should then see you through at max settings on new games for a good while.

I wouldn't upgrade till you got the new monitor.

You will need a GTX then for the higher res if you plan to keep all eye candy on.

The 8800 GTS 320 Mb is fine on a 20" screen. I haven't found anything yet where I have to turn down the settings.

And the GTX cards can only come down in price......

My BFG 8800GTS 640meg gfx cards happily runs games in 1920x1200. CoH / Bioshock / Airborne / GRAW 2 etc.
From what I can remember reading the 320meg cards would be great below 1680x1050 but anything above they would suffer. I could be wrong though

Stalker? Mine struggles to be honest going as low as 20 fps at 1680 x 1050 so I can imagine it would be unplaybale at max detail at 1920 x 1200 with either GTS.

Strange that Stalker plays okay at 1920x1200 on XP only vista is still crashing even with the latest patch. It appears to run smooth not sure on what fps its running at to be honest.

Stalker will struggle on a 320 gts when all the settings are at max, the full lighting option gobbles up more VRam than the 320 can offer. As the new NV cards look like they may be a mid range refresh, i would still consider the GTX and clock its pants off.

True but I would still wait until I had the new monitor. The card he has is fine for the 20" screen atm.

One reason I am nudged towards the GPU is because I will have to wait a month to then get the monitor, and it would bug me a little to have the lower res, especially with the likes of Bioshock and the like (which reminds me I actually need to make a start on that game).

I mean, if I have to wait like 4 - 5 months for a new GPU to come out (they are talking about the 9xxx series released jan/feb right?) maybe getting a GPU now would be nice, but then a nice 24" would be nice too...

If given the choice I think I would rather get the 24" monitor now and albeit not run things at the highest setting and then get a new card Jan/feb time. Either the new 9 series or you'll be able to pick a 8800 GTX for a snip.

It will still look gorgeous on your new monitor.

Otherwise you will get a GTX now, which although will run everything at a higher fps than your GTS, you won't really notice the difference IMO.

Apart from blagging rights who really notices the difference between 50 fps and 90 fps?

Yeah but he's running at least 1900 x 1200 i think. That's my point, no need to upgrade the card until he gets the new screen.

Nope

Woah. Just ran the CSS stress test

Everything cranked @ 1680x1050 8xSSAA

With the 2900 I got...133FPS AVG

With the GTX I just got.. 222FPS AVG

LOL

6 months ago people said "dont get the GTX, the R600 will kill it".
Im still more than happy with my gtx and ive got a feeling it will still be great 12 months after i bought it.
