worth going from c2d 2.4mhzto wolfdale 3.16mhz

it will depend on waht you do with your PC, may i suggest some overclocking first though. a P35 or X38 chipset based MB will do nicely for both the e6600 and the wolfdale, if you dont want SLi

Cheapo Asus P5N-E's can overclock these above 4GHz. No need for a really expensive mobo when you have a 9 (e8400) or 9.5(e8500) multi to play with. Also, consider going for the e8400 instead. The e8500 is only 5% faster at stock speeds, but costs 40% more.

would ther be a big increase going from a core 2 duo 2.4g ro a wolfdale 3.16g and *** mobo would i need ?
For MS Paint masterpieces? No.
For games that aren't CPU intensive? No.
For surfin tha interweb? No.
For scratching your arse? No.
See where I'm going with this chuck?

As my learned colleague jak731 has suggested, if you have a need for speed, try overclocking first (P965 can still give your E6600 a shot in the arm).

and *** mobo would i need ?
***? T.h.e? Guess the word game?

Check for BIOS updates but your mobo prolly could/will support Wolfdale.

Performance of cpu heavy applications should improve by around 35-40% between a E6600, and a Wolfdale @ 3.16 assuming both chips are running at stock speed. If overclocked... well it would all depend on what the final stable speed of each chip. Wolfdale on average is about 5% faster than a Conroe at the same clock speed.

Of course in gaming its a different matter, throw the resolution up to 1680x1050, or even 1920x1200 and add some AA/AF, and even with the excellent 8800GTX, it will be the GPU that's the main bottleneck not the processor. Once the GPU is the bottleneck, even large increases in CPU performance will only give a minor improvement in gameplay.

Save your money, get a decent cooler and clock your 6600. You should see at least 3-3.2ghz with your motherboard. If you want a Wolfdale you will (possibly) need a new mobo as well. There is a beta bios for the Gigabyte 965p series boards but there is no official support as the Wolfdales were designed to work on the P3* and X38/48 chipsets.

The Dq6 is a great overclocking board, start clocking! If your a gamer i don't think your to see any real benefits changing cpu.
