Worth Having AA?

I notice in HL2 that I have no AA, the settings are from X2 to X6. Only appreciable difference when I set it to X6 is the frame rate drops way down! Is it worth keeping it at a modest X2 or do most of you leave it off? Gfx card is in my sig.

Are you saying you don't notice the effects of AA at all or that it doesn't apply any? I can't play without it, the jaggies are just too noticeable now, and crawling edges... ugh.

If you really don't notice the difference between 6xAA and no AA then just leave it off.

I couldn't, but then I only went in game and walked around for a couple of seconds. You reckon 2X would be good?

NO AA

6X AA

try it with AA off and AA at x2, you will see a massive difference in image quality. going from 2xAA to 4xAA is noticable but going from 4xAA to 6xAA is not really visible yet the performance impact will be big.

i always try to run at 2xAA or 4xAA where possible. most older games run fine at 6xAA too, but i find 2xAA is massive improvement over no AA.

also depends on the game, hl2 does not suffer very badly from aliasing like other games do such as farcry and graw.

but other games that don;t suffer much from aliasing is quake 4, doom3 and prey. figures that they don;t cuz they run in opengl which is all vector based anyways.

I can notice a big difference between those screenshots, but you notice it more in motion. Look at the edges of stuff, they are all jaggy on the no AA one and lovely and smooth on the 6xAA one, plus when you start moving the edges of the objects will start crawling which just doesn't look nice at all.

2xAA shouldn't give you too much of a performance hit and will make a big difference, but play around with the settings and see whether the image quality difference is worth the performance trade off.

I always aim for at least 2xAA in all games, if the performance is a bit crap then I'll lower the res before I turn off AA, the difference in image quality is just so big.

Yup I always use AA, usually 4X. Turned it off and you actually loose detail, as everything is all pixelly. It looks unnatural too.

I don't bother with 6X or 8X AA.

I run 2xQ on my 7600GT to save all those precious frames. I'd recommend running 4xAA with that card and game. Should keep the fps way above 60 constantly and give you a nice image to look at.

Hi Beast, what does that mean? Are you saying that you don't have any AA set (i.e: 0x AA) or what?

Aliasing is the saw-tooth along any straight edges and its effects are more noticable at lower res, 1024x768, 1280x1024. As you increase the screen res it has a 'natural' Anti-Aliasing effect, so the higher you go the less AA you need.

What screen res are you running?

There is no right or wrong answer here as peoples tastes will vary, but the aim of the game is to make everything as 'realistic' looking as possible while maintaining 'smooth' gameplay, so its comes down to a toss up between FPS vs AA/AF.

Too little AA/AF (Max FPS) and your eyes will see the jaggies (AA) or the distance blends (AF), the game play will be smooth but you will be surrounded by obvious computer graphics

To little FPS (Max AA/AF) and the game will lag and judder, particularly when it all kicks off and lots of things are trying to kill you and a lot of effects are going off!. Everything will look very realistic and pretty but the lags will 'distract' you from getting into 'the zone'

Out of the two I tend to lean towards FPS (30min/60max) then candy, I'm a real 'twitch' shooter :D

What a bloody good post. :D

I myself am also a framerate man. 30 is the minimum I will accept on a fast paced shoot 'em up.

same here, used to run 2xQ on my 7600gt and still run it on my 7600gs, its a brilliant setting.

I never used to bother with AA at all - it really didn't look that much different (to me) and I'd rather of had more fps. Then HL2 came along and (contrary to what Cyber-Mav says) the jaggies drove me mad compared to other games. I stuck 2xFSAA on and now I can never go back......I can't believe I used to play without it!

Sleep? Pffft, sleep is for the weak. You need nothing more than insane amounts of sugar and/or caffeine for sustenance. :p
