Hi guys, i was just thinking..

If i buy an e2180 and a tuniq tower to cool it that'll be about £100 or just under.

basically my question is, does the extra performance i get from overclocking out perform me buying another processor for £100 and overclocking that on a stock cooler?

many thanks,

sol

It would depend on how good your motherboard, Ram and potentially PSU is as well. If you have good 'sundry' components then you can possibly get a lower end CPU further than a higher end one with average components.

I know of people getting to 3.4ghz or even above on the stock cooler with 21x0 CPUs but then again some others have required after market cooling and still not reached it. Another advantage of aftermarket cooling is that it is usually quieter than stock cooling and has a larger thermal envelope.

You know I'm only using a Freezer 7 Pro and I was able to get mine to 3.5 pretty easily. It'll probably knock about £10 off the overall cost when compared with a tuniq tower, although saying that I think the tuniq tower does a better job of cooling in case with less airflow.

I've had quite a few processors in the past and haven't really noticed a performance difference after overclocking.

But the core 2 architecture really shines through. You can really feel the extra performance a decent overclock gives you. Its definately worth it.

Oh, and nice to see another solaris around here :D
