hello there, im new to the forums and overclockin in general, but i have built several pc's for myself. i recently built a Wolfdale based system with the E8500 and an Asus Maximus Formula (had trouble with the bios at first, but have 1004, now had to borrow my cousins e6600 to boot it). i have 2 times OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel DDR2.

my question is, is this worth it:

i managed this almost straight away and to my suprise it ran stable and didnt go above 40c under load, i also kept the voltage level set to auto in bios. (pic was taken after about 90 mins on COD4 multi)

however, after a little tweaking i got this:

i had to push the voltages to 1.4 and i have read that this, in the long run, is not good at all for the 45nm chips. i cant really afford to get a new chip if this breaks and my warrenty would be void with this overclock. im struggling here, i dont do well with dilemas, so what would u lot do?

1.4v should be ok. Is that as far as it will clock on 1.4v? Just don't give it any more than that. That's how my E8500 became unstable. Too much voltage!! Really there is no point getting a E8500 over a E8400. Most E8400's are hitting 4Ghz+. The best i got out of my E8500 was 4.5Ghz before things rapidly went downhill. Yours should do 9.5x450 i would hope.

people seem to hate the e8500 on here and i have no idea why, the extra .5 multiplyer isnt much, but it does help. and as for gamin, this eats my brothers q6600 for breakfast.

thanks for the advice gents, i will keep it at 4ghz +

No idea why here either. As you can see from my sig, i am a happy E8500 owner. In fact i have another E8500 that i am working on that looks like it will do 4.8ghz Prime/Orthos stable. :)
