Hello,

After stumbling upon this: HIS 4870 512MB

It's really made me wonder if it's worth upgrading my GPU now, despite having no problems with games i currently play on my 8800GT.

Few questions:

- Will the performance boost from a 8800GT be worth the £165? I play games at 1680x1050
- Will the 4870 Last me?
- Is there any price drops due, or anything worth waiting for in the GPU world?
- Anyone else done this upgrade? are you happy with the decision?

Until the 4850 and 4870 came along (not that long ago) everyone said the 8800 could handle everything and was the best thing since sliced bread.

There are two ways of upgrading.

1) Upgrade when the games you play start to struggle in such a way that it spoils your enjoyment.

2) Upgrade every time new hardware comes out, You might not need it but you will feel better knowing you have an elite PC.

well depends what u call the struggle i can see some slow small slow down in tf2 when there is around 20 people in my screen trying to kill each other.

crysis is playable but not for me. as i play aggressively and very fast in some places fps drops bellow 30 in 20 at all very high.

myself decided to go with 4870 toxic that should show up in stores really soon

There is a few games that i'm looking forward to. GTA4, Left for Dead.. both supposed to be out around the November time. That's one of the reasons why I'm considering a 4870, thinking the 8800GT will struggle in new and upcoming games.

The games i play ATM aren't too demanding, Battlefield 2142, TF2 mainly.

Defently worth it, especially if you like using high AA/AF. I went from a GTS to a 4850 in my old system and the difference was massive, and the 4870 is quite a bit quicker than the 4850. With your 3.6Ghz C2D and the 4870 you'll be able to run most games at native res with 4aa 16af max details no problem.

8800GT will already struggle bigtime if you enable vsync + AA.

4870 is close to GTX280 when you enable AA so for the price its an amazing deal and you get much better PQ as AA + Vsync.

No brainer.

May aswell go for the Asus one now as that can be had for the same price and has a 3yr warranty.

wait for the 55nm gtx 280, overclocks better, runs cooler, proberly cheaper.

Are you dreaming it will be more expensive most likely as it will be nv's fastest card and closer in performance to an x2. In the other thread people are also saying its 3-4 months away. Also how do you know it runs cooler and overclocks better. It could be a pure flop for all we know with massive problems.
