Worth me getting a new card at this time?

I'm in a position where at the moment I don't have a graphics card at all due to ongoing RMA troubles (NOT with OC I might add). Eventually I should receive a 7900GX2 (not 7950) from the manufacturers though they are taking forever with this so I'm looking at a BFG 8800 GTS at the moment.

I normally go for the cream of the crop when I get a new graphics card but I have an AMD 64 4000+ chip so I feel a GTX would be a wasted investment. Should I get a GTS or wait forever for the GX2 to arrive? I'm thinking of getting the GTS then selling the GX2 when I do eventually receive the thing but I'm not sure which is the best option so any help is appreciated :)

worse case scenario, they take an extremely long time with the RMA of the 7900GX2 (what is that?? Is it like a 7950GX2?). Could you afford the 8800 GTS and not be out of pocket? In which case, go for it.

If your heavily into your games, it could be worth it. Alternatively, if your looking for a project, you could get a cheap midrange card, whack an after-market cooler on it and see what speeds you can reach.

A GTS is a fine card, which should last a long time.

A 7900GX2 is more or less a 7950GX2 however it is far longer and has higher power requirements. Not 100% but I think the clocks are the same. They are also OEM due to never officially being sold by retailers.

I'm a bit 50/50 over whether buying one would be a stretch, however assuming I sold the GX2 it wouldn't be, hence the difficult position :) I don't have any plans to upgrade to Core 2 just yet (as I only want to upgrade the graphics at this time) even though I know I probably should.

If I do buy something now I want it to be very good for at least a year or so which is why I'm not really thinking about the cheaper 7 series/ATI range because then it's basically a waste in my eyes. I do game at 1024 a lot though due to having a 19" CRT but I do go for the high framerates and excellent image quality too ;)

I'd get a basic PCI-E card so you can run your PC, and see if you can get an ETA on the RMA. Once you've sold your 7900GX2 you'll have the money spare to spend, plus the 8800 might have come down in price in the meantime :)

8600GT/Ultra and R600/R610/R630 are coming out very soon, so I'd say that it's not worth upgrading right now.

There's suddenly going to be lots of choice, lots of price drops, and lots of people selling their old 8800 Series cards for cheap to stay on top of the latest gear.

8800 for gaming at 1024*768?? Surely that is overkill??

Anyway why would a 8800GTX be a wasted investment? If you upgrade to C2D later you can always take the card to the new rig?? Besides 4000+ is easily enough for GTX, it won't be as fantastic as C2D but all the latest games are GPU limited so the GTX will still offer improvements over the GTS.
