Worth overclocking 4790k?

Guys...

I recently built a new system.

My previous was a 2500K which I overclocked to 4.7.

I now have a 4790K.

Is there any point in overclocking this CPU? It turbos to 4.4 and from what I've read people can get maybe 4.6 or 4.7 out of them.

Is it worth the extra 200 to 300mhz?

thanks!

Compare the frames you get in the games you play if no major fps gain I'd leave it at stock until you can gain.

I guess it depends on scaling vs temperatures and what you use your pc for.

My friend just bought a 4790k last week and the stock volts were 1.27v at 4.4ghz. The temps were atrocious despite having a Corsair gt 110, reaching 95c on all cores with ibt/p95, and high 90's when gaming. We didn't even bother scaling the frequency as it was obvious the cpu tim under the ihs was faulty.

He delidded the Ihs and removed the overly thick sealant that bonded the ihs to the pcb, and then applied Coollaboratory Liquid silver to the die and rebonded the ihs back onto the pcb. He now has temps in the 50's-60's for intensive apps, and 40's when gaming at 4.8ghz using 1.31v.

We are just working at scaling vs voltage vs performance as his cpu will run 5/5.1 ghz but the voltage required is 1.4v, temps are fine but we both think the 4.8ghz is the happy medium. So like people have said the only way you'll know is by testing with the things that you do to see if the overclock is worth the effort.

I can get 4.8 from mine at 1.275v. But it's back to stock now. I just wanted to play with it. I could have probably squeezed out more if I'd had a bigger cooler. But it starts to get toasty and the 120mm fans on the heatsink make a racket. I'm sure someone with more skills and better cooling could squeeze more from the chip.

I leave mine at stock, until I need to OC it I'm not going to. The way I see it, and I may be wrong but why push it to 4.7/4.8 if you don't need too. Just degrades the chips lifespan quicker.

I know my chip can hit 4.8 but I'm happy with 4.4 for now.
