Worth overclocking?

Hi all. My 8880 GTS 320mb struggles a lot in Arma 2 so I thought I might overclock it. I have never overclocked a graphics card before so im new at this :p. I have searched the forums and the best program to use is rivatuner? Will this work for me on windows 7 with the latest 186.18 nvidia drivers?

Currently according to nvidia system information my Core Clock is at 580 mhz. Shader clock 1350 mhz. Memory clock 850 mhz ( 1700 mhz data rate)

The card is on its stock cooler, what sort of figures will be realistic for my graphics card to aim for? Will there be a big difference in FPS?

Thank you.

From memory the 3 I had managed around 625 linked. Memory around 1900. They didn't seem that good. Your results might be better.

The main problem with the GTS320 is the lack of memory. Overclocking will help but you'll still be hampered by your frame buffer.

I cant even overclock, it just says no supported drivers for this displayer adaptor. I think thats a sign that I shouldnt overclock :(.

well thats weird - download the latest nvidia drivers and try again mate - you should be able to overclock it. My olf 8800GTS 640mb clocked massively (and i fapping love that card). To some extent i prefered it to my 4870 which has dissapointed me from day one.

Isn't the latest version of RivaTuner rather old? There's a modification you can make to it to make it work with recent drivers.

With your setup your really better looking at upgrading. Your really not doing your system justice with that card.

How would I do this? Will I gain much from overclocking a bit? If its 10 fps I think its worth it. Is there a better program than rivatuner I should try?

I know. I want to upgrade but Im wanting to wait a while till I absolutely need a new card. An overclock might give me a few more fps so I will try and get rivatuner to work somehow.

I don't mean to be rude (and it always sounds like it when you say you aren't d'oh!) but getting even a 4870 1024mb (£114 brand new!!) would blow the 8800gts 320mb out of the water with the performance level's. You could sell the gts on and it would make it even less. I know the suggestion of spending money is easy to say, and perhaps you don't have money to throw at it as we all have lives to lead, but you have a totally unmatched system, massive CPU capability, with an aging card. IMHO you are at the point where you DO have to upgrade.

It will make gaming a pleasure.

Alternatively, rivatuner is a good bet for Nvidia if you really must eek out a few more frames :) Just make sure you have good cooling on the card. You can try uber cheap tricks such as strapping a big fan over the top of the original with cable ties, and a fan on the back of the card to cool the chip are of the PCB down, all will help with an overclock :)

I suppose I could try and sell the old cpu/ram/motherboard and the 8800 gts so id end up paying a bit less for an upgrade. If i do decide to though, it means ive spent nearly £700 this month on my pc. Its adding up a little bit :p

right now then :D:D

the latest riva tuner doesn't work with the latest 8 series Nvidia drivers....because i've been fooling around with this all week.....but it was ok with the older riva tuner/ older drivers......on mine it just wont work.... it sais ``riva tuner does not support these drivers, please update riva tuner``.

no, i deleted Riva tuner instead :D........and overclocked the 8800gt via nvidia performance, it's ok now...but dont go crazy....no more than 650mhz...1800 shader and 1000 memory.

but it used to be 700......1900......1800 :D

but i cant trace my version of the 8800gt on line.... mine has massive circular cooling fins/ case side open, it isn't nvidia, it's a later more powerful version....card colour green

this'll have to last me till next july.... when my new pc is built....Graphics card is still a bit unstable, but i just soldier on..... my guess is the new 8 series drivers dont like Nvidia performance either... but not nearly as bad as Riva Tuner....

conclusion:- do not update your drivers, buy a new card instead !
