Worth playing Oblivion?

Having completed the Witcher 2, I'm impatient for some more fantasy rpg goodness. I think I'll probably get Skyrim when it comes out, but was wondering if it's worth getting Oblivion in the meantime?

I played Morrowind a while ago, but didn't complete it. I found the identi-kit dungeons a bit annoying. I didn't really like the dialogue system either and found NPCs a bit lacking in character.

Does Oblivion improve on any of these areas? Are the graphics still decent? Any essential mods?

There are some great graphics and texture mods for it. Also some that change the game for the better, I'd play it standard BUT I'd change the UI and remove psychic guards.
Regarding the personality of npcs ... They are lifeless and fail, some dialogue is alright, I guess. Some decent stuff to read. The atmosphere in the game is great I think, environments are nice and you feel quite involved.
Is it worth playing? Yes. For the price it can be had for, you can't go wrong.

Oblivion is epic, I have about 50 hours played on my current save without touching anything at all on the main quest, I'm a Vampire working my way into the thieves guild then dark brotherhood :o

I last completed it on the 360 during it's release and just bought it on the PC via steam. Mines modded heavily atm as a result. Despite the game being repetitive, there is a lot of entertainment to have. Just make sure you look into mods and oblivion mod manager.

You have to be careful with modding, the first time I had it I spent more time modding and having problems than I did playing the game, I ended up playing through it on the 360 and loved it.

Since bought it on steam and I really don't care about the main quest, plenty of other things to do.

You won't like Oblivion then.

In all seriousness, I genuinely think that Oblivion was a massive step backwards from Morrowind in all but graphics. Admittedly I seem to be in a minority on this, and yes, it's a lot of game for the price you pay these days, but for what it's worth I think that stuff like auto-levelling worlds totally breaks the game. After completing and absolutely loving Morrowind, I absolutely hated Oblivion.

Thanks for the replies. I'll see if I can find it for a tenner or something. Otherwise I might just wait for Deus Ex to tide me over until Skyrim is released.

So true. In Morrowind I spent more time modding than actually playing it. I have so far spent a week modding, testing and modding Oblivion and I haven't begun a full game yet :o

Savegame corruption due to modding is the main worry as ever especially with character model replacements.

Oblivion's interesting, looks great with mods, and all those things are different from Morrowind so you may get on. Put it's got some pretty serious flaws in it and I've never been able to play it without adding enough mods to seriously destabilise it. It was fun at the time but now you might be better waiting for Skyrim, depending on whether you can find something else to scratch that itch.

Got the GOTY edition off steam, playing it at the mo and loving it. Nearly finished geting all the relics for the knights of the nine mission! It's brill that's all i can say. Oh and make sure to get natural enviroments mod for it, it makes the game not only look better but the weather is good too. Onward!
