Worth putting Win7 on this?

Just ordered Win7 Home Premium to put on my desktop, now wondering if I should get it to put on my laptop too - the problem is I'm not sure if it's worth it given the lappys spec.

It's an Acer Travelmate 2414WLMi with
Celeron M340 1.6Ghz processor
2x1Gb DDR400 dual channel (originally shipped with 1x256Mb, soon binned that!)
40Gb 5400rpm hard drive
Usual Intel integrated graphics (G915 I think) and sound, networking etc.

If I put Win7 on that, is it likely to kill what little performance it has?

(It's only really used for surfing, email and Word docs)

The only reason I'm thinking of it is to make use of the Homegroup feature for ease of sharing docs with my desktop pc, as no matter what I share it just doesn't seem that the laptop (XPHome) can access files on the desktop (XPPro.)

Since Win7 is such a bargain right now, is it worth the upgrade, or should I just not bother?

Celeron

//shudder

Celerons have a tough time running XP :p

I'd install your other copy, with no key to 'evaluate' the performance it gives..

If it's crap, then stickw ith XP

Not looked into your CPU, but how does it compare with an Atom?

If it's pretty close then netbooks - with a similar spec on most of the other parts - run Windows 7 very well.

Thanks :)

Lol, only bought it cause my wife wanted something she could surf with and write docs on while in bed (she's ill, spends a lot of time there resting) and it was cheap in a certain supermarket chain.

Now, I hadn't thought of that....quick image of the partition just in case, wipe and install win7, play a bit, decide :) Good call

Might do it with the RC (which I've already got in) so I can buy it while the cheap deal is around if I go that way.

Thanks.

No idea, will do some research, thanks.

by all accounts, it ought to run fine, in non-aero mode at least. i'd reccomend a nice fresh install of XP pro though.

Thanks all.

Think I'll run the upgrade advisor on it (only found it yesterday) and try out that 90 days trial :)

If it's a match for XP then I'll give a punt, otherwise I'll leave as is.....
