Hi,

My existing rig isn't all that great.. P4 3.0Ghz HT, 2gig RAM, 7800GT...

As a interim upgrade, do you think it's worth upgrading the GFX to a 8800GT now that they are affordable ? I've just bought a new 24inch WS and I'm thinking my 7800GT is gonna struggle.

Or should I save the dosh and wait another yr or so and upgrade the whole caboodle... CPU, mobo, mem and whatever the next offering from nVidia or ATI will be....

I upgraded from a BFG 7800GT OC to a BFG 8800GT OC..... best upgrade I have ever done, and now that they are £50 cheaper than when I bought it, its even better!

You'd see a huge increase in performance if you made that upgrade. :)

Beware though, you might find you're CPU limited. Especially in 3D Mark 06.

You will see a good increase but that CPU is going to limit the 8800GT very, very badly so that you won't see the increase you should usually see from a GPU upgrade of that magnitude (8800GT is about 3x-4x faster on average).

Is doing a very cheap upgrade to Core2 out of the question?

E2160 - £44 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-152-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=793

ABIT IP35 - £64 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-129-AB&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=913

2GB Gskill 6400 - £29 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-014-GS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813

Total = £137

Minus £60 for selling your old kit = £77 for the complete platform upgrade. Would be well worth it when overclocked and would get the best out of any GPU! :)

I sold my MSI 7900GTO yesterday for £65 + £5.90 postage because I'd bought a 8800GT and Oh my goodness what a huge difference it's made. I now play the PC version of GOW at 1680 by 1050 res with everything maxed and it runs incredibly smooth. I'm glad I got my hands on the £130 this week only offer. :)

i was using 7900gt cards in sli for a while, got an 8800 gts 640mb, far better solution, but tink i might try another gts 512 8800 in sli. especially with oc's new price

I upgraded my 7800gt to an 8800gt, I was worried it wouldnt give me much of an increase....Wow was I wrong!

As they are now even cheaper its definately worth doing!

To th OP, like you I have a 7800gt. And I think now is the wrong time to buy. I'm waiting until the new 9800's are out, as the 8800's should drop in price. Now depending on the price/performance of the 9800's will decide wether I upgrade to an 8800 or 9800.

I'd just sit tight for the moment and see what happens ;)

I feel exactly the same - makes sense to wait when you're inside the same release month as 2 new card releases.

I don't know if the 8800GT will drop much in price. If there's very little difference between the 8800 series and the 9800 series and the price of the 8800 is a lot less then the demand for the 8800 series cards will still be there which may prevent a big drops in their prices. I'm not saying the price won't drop but I can't see it dropping by much if there's still a huge demand for them.
