Recently changed mobo and reinstalled cooler with board in case. CPU is 9800x3d. Noticed some scratching on the heatsink base nickel finish caused on my first install.

Just can't line up both spring loaded screws on heatsink with mounting posts on board simultaneously, causing heatsink to move around a bit, disturbing the paste application. On this occasion I got one screw to catch on one post, did a couple of turns, but had to lift heatsink into position to mount screw on 2nd post. Then first screw let go, as I didn't give enough turns. Eventually got it installed with even pressure. But I bet I caused some more scratches on base.

Thinking of getting a new G2 and starting again more carefully with board out of case. Is this crazy ?

My idle temps are around 36c-38c with windows sitting there, low 40's when doing normal windows tasks. Mid 50's in gaming. Shader compilation 65c. 70c max was what I saw in Ada Extreme and Cinebench 2023. My ambient is 20c.

So I guess my temps are good and changing the cooler out is a waste of cash ?

Not worth it, the thermal paste will fill in any gaps.
