Worth the upgrade?

dont do it, or get a i7 instead. you wont see much difference from e8400 to q9550, especially e8400 is more overclockable.

By the time you sell your E8400 (best prices on the bay not the members market) the quad will only have cost you around £50-60. You have a good P45 mobo so a Q9550 should hit or get very close to 4Ghz and it would be a worthwhile upgrade and prolong the life of your 775 rig. By the time you are then in need of a new rig 1156/1366 will most likely have been replaced by something else. I doubt if either socket is going to have anything like the longevity of 775. I did it a couple of months back (from a E8500) and everything just seems smoother to me.

I've done just this, upgrading both my machines from E8400 CPUs to a Q9650 and Q9550 respectively.

Still worked out significantly cheaper than a whole cpu/mobo/mem swap to i5/i7 and will provide more than enough performance to see me through this year, at which point I'll go straight to Sandy Bridge and skip Nehalem altogether.
