Worth the upgrade?

I'm running an i3 530@ 4.2ghz with a HD6950@ 920/1450 and was wondering if the upgrade I would see if purchasing a 3570K or something similar would be worth it.

I play a lot of battlefield 3 and comfortably get >45fps with everything on high. Would the CPU make a huge difference? I know BF3 relies more so on GPU but I will be playing other titles as well.

Thanks in advance.

Well the short answer is yes. But long answer is no, becuase you first need a gpu capable of running the game comfortably on ultra, before the cpu needs to be upgraded to support the gpu at those settings.

I would expect however for you to still see an improvement, but you will still be slightly hindered by the gpu.

I see, I plan on upgrading the GPU at some point anyway possibly to a 79xx but only if I do the CPU at the same time otherwise that seems like overkill with the i3. Would the one of the 79xx and a 3570k be a good match?

Yep, if you want to keep your board you're probably better off with a i5 760, i7 860 or somesuch which will be somewhat of a boost.

Yes u need a quad core for bf3. I had an i3 and the dual core was choppy in the end I gave up and went quad. Never looked back
Actually it's a simply answer as "you need quad-core", but more about how much grunt that the CPU deliver as a whole. For example, a i3 2120 would be performance better than older Quad-core like overclocked Q6600 or Phenom II X4, despite being a dual-core.

Thankyou for all your replies.

I was aware that I needed a new board, I had half decided on this one: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-493-AS&tool=3

Is there a cheaper yet similarly capable board around? I've given myself a buduget of around £300 for CPU and Motherboard, give or take no more than about £30. I want to keep it frugal though.

I bought the Gigabyte Z77 D3H motherbaord for just less than £80. For me and my use it ticks all the boxes with all four DIMMS occupied (with different memory types) and overclocking my 3570k a treat.

Have a look at its spec on Gigabytes website to see if it fits your needs.

For me it would be pointless paying for features that I would not need.
