is it worth upgrading 6970 for a better gpu? I was thinking 7970 but the move would be the best part of £400 including all WC kit to change over. I can reclaim about a 1/3 of that selling my current gpu. So in effect, is it worth the upgrade @1080p ?

I don't mind green or red if there is a better option

I would say no, not in the slightest. I didn't feel going from a 5870 to a 7970/670/680 was worth the outlay, so I would be very very happy with my 6970 and be waiting for something really special to come along.

If you just have the itch, surely there is something else you can throw money at. An outrageously expensive set of headphones? All this talk of "120hz and you wont go back to 60hz" great headphones have a huge impact and it's largely neglected. Less of an issue if you aren't a music buff, I wouldn't go spending a few hundred on headphones just for explosions and screaming, but if you enjoy music, then treat yourself to something special.

The current top end cards are anything but special and certainly not excellent value for money.

EDIT: What are you like for solid state storage? the samsung 830 series are "cheap" just now and there is cashback. I managed to get 2x256gb ssd for £289.98 and will be getting £40 of that back from samsung.
