Hi strange question I have an Corsair AX850 brought few years ago but never even used really but will be with a new build soon.

Is it worth upgrading the p/s to the newer Corsair p/s units, was wondering if technology has updated and p/s units are more efficient or better since the AX850 came 2-3 years ago ?

No point in updating it, will still probably be an excellent unit.

+1

This is a seasonic-built, fully modular, 80 plus gold efficiency PSU that should power pretty much any dual GPU rig you could throw at it. It even comes with a 7 year warranty, so you should have around 4 years still left of that.

There are some PSUs with a bit higher efficiency (80plus platinum and Titanium), but the difference is not nearly significant enough to consider switching to one of those IMHO.

I remember reading on here that some of the newer AX i series psu's are actually of an inferior quality than the older AX. As the guys above have stated, stick with it as its still an excellent psu.

A friend of mine i work with had his ax 860 go and Corsair offered to replace it with an AX860i. After linking him to that useful OEM PSU page, he requested a on par model from a similar OEM to his original 860. They took a little longer in the RMA but in the end he got the AX860 after a bit of e-mailing. To be fair, it was four years old and had a five year warranty, I was surprised they replace it with a new one cost free considering how late in the warranty it was. I have had companies tell me that rather than send a replacement towards the end of the warranty, they would offer me a discounted price on the replacement part, as i would have had fairly good use out of the product before it broke (within its warranty).

The AX860 can't be for years old as I'm pretty sure they came out in 2012, even the previous model AX850 is under 4 years old. :)

Both also came with a 7 year warrenty. :)

Quality psu used in main rig to cope with two cards and wee overclock :)

Just ordered an AX750 for 2nd rig....7 year warranty says a lot about the quality of them :)
