Worth upgrading a 2600k?

I wouldn't have thought so with a decent overclock. Even if it is you're going to have to spend serious money to get something appreciably better at the moment.

If I were to upgrade, would a 5820 or a 4790 be the better choice?

Does the 4790k offer DDR4 support?

If you really have the itch to upgrade, moving onto the X99 platform would a more significant upgrade. More cores / threads, soldered no need to delid, Quad Channel DDR4 support and Broadwell -E next year or later.

The only real reason to consider Z97 after the X99 launch was DDR4 pricing, but it has dropped to the point it's just as cheap to get 16GB DDR4 2400mhz/2666mhz as it is equivalent DDR3.

Z97 makes sense with a i5 4690K as a cheap gaming platform, but if you're looking at spending i7 4790K money X99 makes way more sense. With the 5820K you're getting 50% more CPU for similar cost.

After reading some reviews I think I would prefer the 5930k. Cost to upgrade is around £1000. I can get a 4970k and Z97 M Power for around £390, or use the GByte upgrade thing and pay around £440.

So the question is, is moving to the Z99 platform with a 5930k with DDR4 worth £500-£600 extra compared to swapping out my mobo and CPU for a 4790k and Z97X-UD5H-BK. Bearing in mind the mobo I have chosen for DD4 is the ASUS Rampage Extreme so could chop another £100 off the upgrade price.

Unless you're going to use 3 or more GPU's and to be honest even then there is little reason to choose the 5930K over the 5820K, it's almost double the price and only advantage is more PCI lanes,. Bear in mind if the 4790K limited PCI lanes didn't put out you off considering that CPU then the 5820K which has more PCI lanes than the 4790K should be a bonus, especially with the cheap price.

No need to go expensive with DDR4 either as most X99 mobo's are in early stages and have trouble running the highest speed ram stable anyway.

You could knock off £100's of pounds off you're build by going 5820K and Corsair DDR4. More money to put towards better GPU / GPU's which will have way more impact on gaming performance.

Going to go with a 4790k and a Gigabyte motherboard, I can upgrade it for free to Z99 and by then prices and RAM etc will have come down and have greater choice.

If you've got the money then don't be dissuaded. Your usage is likely to see more benefit than the average gamer. Get some pre and post benches if you do!

I'm using a similar CPU with a 7990 and can't see the benefit being substantial enough.

Sorry if my above comment seemed 'off'. Wasn't intended like that!

I've got some 2600k benches in Alien, Fire Strike, Batman Origins and some others. Should have some decent data.

Thought I would post my results in various game benchmarks as I go along at the res I play (3440x1440p),

Thief
2600k min fps 15.5, average 53.9
5860X min fps 68 average 80

Using Mantle.

Alien Isolation
2600k average 118.12
5960X average 133.79

DIRT Showdown
2600k average 100.50
5960X average 157.70
