I'm not really sure what the differences are, to be honest. I use it to watch Netflix in 4k, Amazon Prime Video and I've just set up a PLEX server on my NAS so am using the Amazon Fire PLEX app to stream media files.

One thing I am somewhat interested in is that I have heard it might be possible to use the Amazon Fire TV to play emulated games. Would getting the gen 3 help with that at all? I'm quite interested in seeing what all the cool things you can with the box are.

The Fire TV 2 is more powerful then the Gen 3.
The only difference that the Gen 3 has is that the Gen 2 doesnt have HDR, whereas the Gen 3 does.

Id stick with the Gen 2 which by the way can play emulated games no problem at all. Do a search on google and install something like retroarch and gamesome (app store) for the front end and away you go :)

Awesome. Thanks for the info. I'll look into the emulator scene. Never been into it before.

If you want to upgrade i'd hold off for the new Fire TV, it was rumoured around the time the new Echos were released but rumours have all gone quiet since.

Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for that. I just found out that my TV supports HDR but my current Amazon Fire TV does not (only supports 4k) so when the new box comes out I'll upgrade just so I can see what HDR is like. I'm not quite ready to invest in a 4k Blu-ray player just yet.

Thanks, everyone :).
