Yes i would say if your current games are struggling?

I would say for your resolution you should be looking at either :

GTX 460/768 or 1GB. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=56&subid=1830

The 1GB 460 is a slightly better card as it has more video memory which will allow more eye candy turned on etc,the 768 version is still ok mind

AMD 6850. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-020-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1866

Both cards are very similar in performance when running at stock clocks

A little tip its worth clocking your i7 for more gains when gaming:)

Yes my games are showing signs of struggle.
I really don't need anything else for my birthday so it would be nice to play games on max settings as I wont be changing my monitor any-time soon and plan to overclock my CPU if it begins to bottle-neck.

When does the next generation of cards come out and would it be worth waiting or are those you suggested recently released?

The 6850/6870 are AMDs new generation, they have the 69** cards coming out next month these will be a much higher price the the 6850/6870.

For your res my first post is the best advice i can give.:) and will be a very big upgrade for you.

Just reading the post about the 69xx also being delayed to about mid december? Also with the cards likely to cost about £300+ I think that is outside my price range.

Thanks for info :)

I'm still on a HD4870 512mb runnig things at 1920x1200 on a Q9550 oc'd to 3.91GHz, 8GB ram. Mind you I'm mainly playing TF2. Although games like GTA4/Batman/Empire etc run fine.

I'm debating the upgrade as well. My main issue is I'm still on a p35 mobo (Abit IP35Pro) i.e. pcie 1.1. Not sure whether the slower PCIe will be a bottleneck? I will probably skip this latest generation. And then do the major upgrade next year inc sandybridge/mobo & next gen graphics.

As for OP, I would strongly recommend to oc the CPU first. At that res, with a higher clock on the CPU you should get abit more out of the 4870. Also with mine, I oc'd the 4870 a little and that helps as well...can't remember the exact clocks at the moment.

Will try that first then cotton but like I said I dont need anything else and I would like to play on max settings. Can you post your clocks when you have the time?
Also just realised my next purchase will likely be nvidia as my monitor is 3d capable so makes sense to get NVIDIA.
