Worth upgrading from a 7900GT

Well as the subjects states, short and sweet.

Taking my CPU into consideration (4800 x2),not to mention whether the motherboard will even support a 8xxx series card (DFI RS482). Would I see any real benefit in upgrading to a 8 series nvidia card from a 7900GT?

I shall not be doing a full upgrade till next year so this is merely a stop-gap till then. However if the perfomance boost is likely to be minimal well...

cheers, Paul.

Should be a very good boost, but if you can wait for the R600 range then it might be worth it - they may have better driver support in VISTA (which I see you're running).

Well I'm still using xppro x64 sp2 mainly for games playing.

But even with my cpu you reckon I should see a boost? Hmmm, that's positive.

Nothing wrong with a 4800 X2. Although the conroe chips are the CPU de jour doesn't mean AMD are rubbish. There are people on here with much slower CPUs than that running 8800 cards and getting good results. 3d mark will be slower than the equivalent conroe system, but there will be a smaller gap in games.

Well darn, now I ned to research up on the myriad of different 8800xxx's out there. I'm guessing the GTX as opposed to the GTS would be overboard (not to mention rather expensive). I'll happily spend around the 200 mark though.

I generally play at 1680x1050, so the next question, taking into consideration by cpu, motherboard and seasonic 430 silent-x, what's the best card for that setup? (I'm assuming the psu should be able to accommadate since I it happily runs the 7900gt).

EDIT - Yikes, minimum 500w, recommended 600w! Surely not!

Cheers, Paul.

do what im doing, wait untill the nextgen ati cards are out, they seem to be promising (as always) although i have always used nvidia, i feel times have changed.

Well maybe, but if the requirements are also as high I'm kind of stuffed unless I also opt for a large psu, I was hoping my current Seasonic 430 could at least power a 8800gts (if I did go down that route).

I'm pretty sure, it would still run and be stable (yeah right-o)?!? Anyone else have any experiences with running the 8800 series on lower than speced 500watt psu's?

Cheers, Paul.

Power requirements from the NVidia website:-

8800 GTS:

This graphics card requires:

PCI Express®-compliant motherboard with one x16 graphics slot

6-pin supplementary power connector

Minimum 400W or greater system power supply (with 12V current rating of 26A)*

*Minimum system power requirement based on a PC configured with an Intel® Core™2 Extreme X6800

You should be fine.

OK thanks, I was looking at the info on OC. Well do I wait for ATI or plunge........ I think I'll wait till May to see what ATI produces, if nothing else it may mean a dip in price for the 8800 gts.

Cheers, Paul.

Im running an EVGA 8800GTS AC3 alongside my Amd 4400 x2 socket 939, and it's been a massive jump up from my previous 7800GTX.

Im running this lot on an oldish Tagan 480w psu too, so you should be fine. It's well worth the upgrade.
