hey all im wondering if its time to make the upgrade. iv had this chip for coming on 5 years now. and i dunno it seems to be slacking since now i game in 4k resolution and hwat not. im woindering if it would be worth investing in a z270 chipset with 16gb of ddr4 ram and an i7 7700k. what are peoples thoughts and sugestions?

but the i7 7700k is over 4gz at stock..so surly thats much better no? plus the ddr4 ram being a lot faster..it must all add up to better performance. as of now when i game at 4k i get stuttery gameplay others have said my cpu is a bottleneck for my graphics card. i dont no what to beleave. but im leaaning towords just getting the upgrade.

I recently upgraded from a 2500k to a 6700k and the difference isn't exactly night and day.

Minimum fps are higher and things are a little smoother and snappier.

I wasn't expecting a huge difference though. Happy enough just knowing my 1070 is now hitting it's max potential in every game.

What gpu do you have? If its a high end one then I'd say go for it. If not, then use the money towards a 1070 or 1080 instead.

It's better yes and frame times are likely improve at 4K, but it won't be big jump in performance for gaming across all games, I would say it's only worth it if your playing bf1 everyday as that thing loves the hyperthreading of the i7's. You see a hell of a lot 2500k's and 2600k's paired with 1070's and 1080's in people's signatures on here because you are not really getting that much of a performance increase with newer CPUs, unless you really have an upgrade itch or the faster SSD's I wouldn't bother. But hey, it's your money and your free to spend it however you like pal!

I looked at loads of bench marks clock for clock the it 3xxx seems to be about 10% slower than 6xxx is most stuff (if that)... and the 7xxx was only a few % ahead of the 6xxx... not looked at i7 v i5 in high res gaming

depends what you doing in some games it can be upto double the difference some games 10-20 percent. depends what games.

wait for what zen is now. its so close even if skeptical you would be silly not to see if its worth going that route.

FWIW: a little while back my motherboard gave out, so unfortunately I pretty much had to go for a new cpu as trying to find a board for an older, unsupported platform proved not quite as easy as I thought it would be. So, in the end, I went from my trusty 3570K to a 6600K, and although I can see a difference in some tasks/applications, if I hadn't needed to go for a new platform then I wouldn't have.

Of course, you'll see more of a jump in performance with a 7700K but I doubt it will be all that much, generally speaking.

Improvement in cpus has been pretty pathetic since sandy bridge to be honest. Largely down to a total lack of competition.

I feel my 6700k is a reasonable upgrade from my 2500k, although a lot of that is down to moving from i5 to i7 and ddr4 ram.

It'll be another 5 years before i upgrade again i suspect....

Id say if you have anything newer than a 2500K its not worth upgrading myself. I went from a 2500K to 7600K, DDR4, etc and while it is faster (and overclocks like a demon if thats important to you) the gains aren't as much as you'd think, for me, I had the 2500K for a few years and this lot will last me another few.

i5 7600k would be just as good for games and you could invest 100 squid elsewhere.

3570K should be fine for 60Hz gaming.

More than that I would upgrade.

if thats the case then why am i not getting 60fps at 4k in most of my games when other people with same gpus as me are only dif being there cpu. as an example the resident evil teaser gives me just over 40fps and as another example i was on sli 980tis and even with that stup up i was not getting fluid fps in sli.

im on a 1080 gpu

What is the full system spec? At stock speeds with 1600mhz memory the graphics card will be twiddling it's thumbs in most situation.

A bigger overclock on the CPU and running the memory at 2000Mh plus would help a lot.

Even a real bad 3570k should do 4.4ghz which would be 10% over what you have.

3570k does get hot but as long as you have decent cooler it shouldn't matter. Mine at 4.7ghz will hit 90c on intel burn test but never gets anywhere near that gaming and I had it running like this since release 4 years ago.

If you can find a good price on a 3770k then i suggest you buy one.
And once it's tested and working ok you could sell the 3570k to offset the cost of the upgrade.
My 3.6ghz 3570k was great at 1080p with my gtx1060 but there were some games that maxxed out the cores and you could see stuttering in tomb raider, gta 5 and assasins creed syndicate/unity.
I got myself a 3770k very cheap off a friend and although i can't clock it, those games run perfectly now.

im not gaming at 1080 though at 1080 everything is fine. but im on a 4k screen 3840x2160 to be exact and anything lower then its natvie looks horrible.. 1440. looks better then 1080 but the image looks blurd. so i want to have it at native. as it is on this cooler im allready hitting like 64c after 5 hours of prime. 65c after 10 mins of intel extream. and this is only at 4ghz. when i first had this chip 5 years ago i had it on a 4.5 overclock. and it was 1.25volts plus very high LLC.and i think my temps were 64c or something like that.i dont rember.but i have since had blue screens so it became unstable at somepoint and so i have dield it down to 4ghz. temps are worse on the stock cooler as i tested it to compare temps and on that its at 80c on the intel test and 79 on prime. with the corsair its 65-64 my temps are ideling in the mid 40s right now. and this is at 4ghz on a manual voltage of 1.18 with very high LLC also there is a strange buzzing imiting for the cpu itself..it could be the motherboard but it sounds like its coming direclty form the cpu..this is another resson why i wish to upgrade. i allready had to replace the hx1000 psu as my pc started randomly shutting down. and since newere platforms are better and support higher tech thats why i was considienrg the kaby or waiting to see what zen is like or waiting for cannon lake if its worth it.
