I have read a few benchmark comparisons between these chips and the 6700k looks better/faster at most things, on a newer architecture and more efficient. However it has less cores and a lower L3 cache.

Would it actually be an upgrade? Would I notice any real world performance difference.

Main uses are Photoshop, 3d modelling and gaming

x99 might be better for your needs, photoshop and 3d moddelling.

6700k is a tad faster for gaming but a 5820k (similar price) will smash it in anything that makes use of the extra cores.

A lot of the newer batch 5820k's are overclocking very well too.

You're not likely to be particularly CPU limited in Photoshop unless you're running batches. Or do you find yourself sitting around waiting for filters?

Modelling depends so much on your workload. You core or clockspeed limited there, or neither?

Gaming the 6700K is probably a decent upgrade. What GPU, games, and monitor?

Just a 1080p monitor. 2 x AMD 290s. Battlefield mainly but few others I plan to purchase soon. Have some older games that aren't that taxing on the screen. I have farcry 3 and crysis, also sleeping dogs. Id like to get more of the farcry series but I really don't game that much. Perhaps 1 night a week at most

Thanks for the advice guys. Can anybody suggest a good board to go with it too that has good features but doesn't cost the earth. Say 200 max?

There's this bundle, which could save you a few £££s:

Just bear in mind that you'll need some DDR4 RAM as well:

I've got that RAM and have had no issues with it. If you want just sheer quantity of RAM, then this would work just as well:

To be honest, 16GB is probably more than enough for now unless you're doing some pretty heavy duty FEA simulations. My workstation at work has 32GB and I've never seen any of my rendering/3D modelling/simulations use more than 16GB.

The guys are pointing you in the right direction though just want to check do you have SSD drives and is your 980 running at stock clocks?

I have 3 ssd drives and 1 storage. Current CPU is at stock has been mildly over clocked last year for a little while for benchmarking purposes
