Worth upgrading monitor?

Hi guys,

I'm enjoying my new OCUK system (built around the MSI GTX 970) and I'm currently using it HDMI'd into a Samsung LE32C50. This is a 5-year old TV but it did get good reviews at the time. Size is 32", Input delay is apparently 14ms, resolution is 1920x1080 and it runs at 60hz.

How important is pixels-per-inch? If I were to get a 24" 1920x1080 monitor would my image quality be noticeably increased? The furthest I'll be sitting from the screen is around 5 feet.

Is 14ms a big deal compared to 1ms with input lag?

And how are people getting on with G-sync? I'm getting a fair amount of tearing in Shadow of Mordor and if I enable V-sync I'm getting pretty regular drops to 30fps with everything on ultra (except textures).

Opinions welcome!

G syynnncccc.

You'll deffo notice a difference from 32 inc down to 24 inch. My rule is I will never buy over 24 inch on a 1080p because the pixel spread is just awful in my eyes...

I just bought the 320 quid G sync from AOC at 24 inch and all that goodness at 144mhz, There is zero input lag, Lovely colours. Its a amazing bit of kit for the money. With that 970 you'd be fine with it, Shadow of mordor being a poor benchmark for anything at the moment :P

Yeah, 32" down to 24 is quite a difference. I just worry that I'm joining the ranks of the anoraks and concerning myself over negligible differences... (No offence :) )

I've never seen a display offering more than 60fps. My main concern with aiming higher is that in order to even get past that threshold I may have to sacrifice eye candy. You talk about Shadow of Mordor being a poor benchmark... Bad optimisation? I managed a stable overclock of +140 on the core of my 970 and Fraps is showing me 60-85 FPS. Would other games be doing better? It's the only one I've tried so far!

It's not a great game for benchmarks, It's a tad random at times.

I mean yea even with my two 980s I'd have to slip things down in the settings if I ever wanted to sit at 144 fps, But the power of G sync makes it smooth no matter what FPS you are sitting at so overall you can run whatever you want with that screen and still look really nice.

Ok, but would it be fair to assume that my average fps in SoM is going to be fairly reflective of other AAA titles? If so, I'm not far beyond 60fps... In which case, why fuss about 144 functionality?

I notice however that there are no G-sync monitors available that are less than 144hz. I also read on a pretty in-depth review that there is a 'sweet spot' with G-sync around 50fps where its work really shines. This is kind of contradictory- it seems that if I want to take advantage of G-sync I'll be aiming for around 50fps with eye-candy enabled, and yet the 144hz refresh rate is clearly putting a premium on the monitor.

What fps do you generally aim for Techen? Did you get the G-sync monitor at the same time as your SLI 980's or were you running them with a regular monitor beforehand? Comparisons?
