Hi,

I currently have some old Corsair Vengence LPX 16gb running at 3200mhz 15-17-17-35.
Apart from possibly upgrading to 32gb, is faster ram such as the 8Pack stuff worth an upgrade to?

Processor is a ryzen 3700x if it makes a difference at all. System is mostly gaming, streaming, Internet use and some coding.

Thanks all!

8pack stuff is not worth it. You can however go to 3600c16 ballistix stuff for very little cost which will give a bit of boost. Currently 2x8GB is around £55

I find the new ballistix don’t overclock anymore ie 3600 will run at 3600 only no more 3800 or 4000. But their timings can be tightened quite a bit with improves latency.

Theres not much benefit to be had past 3600 CL14, any more is usually only worth going for by overclocking a cheap kit.

Having said that it depends on prices. 2x16 3600 Ballistix for <£150 is worth going for also for the increased capacity, but I would also consider 2x16 Gb any speed Samsung B Die for <£180.

Whats not worth getting is the £300+ 2x16 Gb kits no matter the specs, you only get like a 2% improvement at most between 3600 CL14 and 4000 Mhz at higher latencies. Maybe a 5% boost if you manage to get to 4400 CL16.

I got my 3200 Ballistix Sport LT for £150 and sold my 2666 for £119 on eBay. That £30 difference took me from 3200 CL14 to 4200 CL16, but that getting extremely lucky, and I was just hoping for just 3600 CL14.

Pretty good chance your existing RAM will do 3600mhz C16. I'd tweak what you've got rather than splashing cash for pretty small gains.

If you're on a 3700x, it may hit a brick wall at 3200. Mine would let me get down to pretty aggressive timings at 3200 with Samsung b-die, but wouldn't do 3600 even at 1.35v c20.

Try Ryzen dram calculator (export your xmp from thaiphoon burner) and try tuning your timings.

That seems pretty high, how long are you expecting it to last at 1.5v? :o

The most current high end DDR4 sticks are already specified for 1.5+v, and use the same chips. People have already been running their ram as such for well over a year, mines been at 1.48v for about a year+ and 1.53v for 6 months without issue. The only difference is the manufacturers have now started hand picking the best chips to charge a small fortune for, so no more buying a cheap 3200 kit and getting 4000+ low latency extra for free.

These current 3800 CL14 and 4200+ CL16 kits aren't happening on under 1.5v. But its more worthwhile to get the cheaper 3200-3600 kits with the same chips and overvolt them to the same, though currently you can only do that with Samsung B die as Micron have started reserving their best E die chips for Ballistix Max.
