Worth upgrading to a 780?

I currently have a AMD 7970 running on my Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz @ 4.40GHz connected up to a 27" iMac monitor.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a NVIDIA 780 - just wondered if it worth it for the system I have?

No. Wait two weeks to see what the 870/800 are like. Even if they are rubbish the 780's will likely come down in price anyway.

A few people say the same, but i fear there wont be any 780's left when the 8 series arrives.

Everyone always says this but the 470/480,570/580 and 670/680 stock were all sold off at bargain prices when the next generation was out. I don't think this will be much different.

You would be a fool in my opinion not to wait when we are so close to the announcement for the 800 series.

Wait for the expected price collapse of the 700 series when the 800 series comes out. I did last year and managed to pick a 680 for £50 less than 7970s where going for at the time and about £80 less than what they were going for the week before.

As for the performance jump over a 7970 - might not be huge. I got a 780 and really benefited from the extra VRAM and bus width for 1440p but you already have both those things.

The 780 is only really slightly faster than a 7970. I'm in the same boat. But I might be getting a cheap titan black :D

Sorry a bit confused... Did I read two weeks roughly for the 8 series? I really need all the info I can get before buying this ocuk gaming system with a 780 inside!

Yes around 2 weeks, wait for info on it. As it's been said, you can get a cheaper 780 or gother with an 800 series if they are a significant upgrade.

Keep with nvidia and enjoy trouble free gaming

I would stick with AMD but that new Asus sift monitor and G-sync is going to move me to Nvidia..

Is the 7970 running at stock or is it a GHZ edition ? (what model is it ?)

This is fairly important for any of us to be able to give you an effective performance increase prediction, as there is a big difference between an original stock 7970 and one of the newer faster GHz editions ( or 280x's).

I will wait two weeks then:( was really looking forward to buying that ocuk system. Looked beastly xD

I honesty thought around October/ November for the 8 series.

Fingers crossed for two weeks I suppose!
