@Op, if you are craving moar fps, a 780/290 is the next step, the 8 series is due any time soon and the 780 will probably hit some kind of discount on eol specials.
Having owned a 7970 and flashed it to a GHz, no it's not important and not a big difference.
His 7970 will overclock as far as a Ghz would overclock.
It was only important and a big difference when it was compared against a stock boosting 680-'out of the box' 'nobody overclocks any more' argument at the time.
Is the 7970 running at stock or is it a GHZ edition ? (what model is it ?)
This is fairly important for any of us to be able to give you an effective performance increase prediction, as there is a big difference between an original stock 7970 and one of the newer faster GHz editions ( or 280x's).
