Worth upgrading to a 780?

@Op, if you are craving moar fps, a 780/290 is the next step, the 8 series is due any time soon and the 780 will probably hit some kind of discount on eol specials.

Is the 7970 running at stock or is it a GHZ edition ? (what model is it ?)

This is fairly important for any of us to be able to give you an effective performance increase prediction, as there is a big difference between an original stock 7970 and one of the newer faster GHz editions ( or 280x's).

Having owned a 7970 and flashed it to a GHz, no it's not important and not a big difference.

His 7970 will overclock as far as a Ghz would overclock.

It was only important and a big difference when it was compared against a stock boosting 680-'out of the box' 'nobody overclocks any more' argument at the time.:p

Well thank you for letting all of us here at the OVERCLOCKERS.CO.UK forums know that asking someone if he overclocks or if the card he is using is a stock or pre overclocked variant isn't important, when giving him upgrade advice.

I gave the op the advice he needs, the rest was aimed at you, coming from experience of using one for a while, have you?

The Ghz/non GHz is the one and the same gpu with different bios/clocks, doesn't matter what bios it uses, when oc'ed properly, they hit the same clocks, pretty simple really if you think about it.

So do you know if he overclocks or not seeing as you gave him the advice he needs?

You can aim all you like at me, it still doesn't make me asking him the question if he is running his 7970 at stock or if it is one of the pre clocked faster than original versions any less relevant.

Or are you suggesting that once you have given him advice nobody else is allowed too.

Aye the standard 7970 was seriously underclocked, was quite common to pull another 20-30% out of them, all amd did with the ghz was give it the clocks the chip deserved and pumped the vcore to 1.256v for good measure.

@op, as above, wait it out and see what comes of the 800 series, if it's a let down go have a peak at the 780/290 again. You wouldn't want to lay down £300+ on a card today and find it's a decent margin slower in a few months.

Not at all bru, just stating the GHz/7970/factory oc doesn't really matter-they are within a very small performance margin to not really matter, as you stated, this is overclockers here and it was criminal not to oc the 7970 regardless the version, it's dying to be oc'ed...

Its not that small between launch day ref 7970 and a top tier 7970 ghz oc (worst/best case scenario). 925mhz standard vs cards that were very close to 1200mhz is around a 30% performance bump.

I better add before it goes south, I'm not trying to berate you bru, I'll apologise in advance if you thought I was, I just don't think it matters having used both bios versions and overclocking the nuts off of both.:)

Yes exactly, but evidently these things don't matter when its a man wearing a green shirt saying it, only when the fellow saying it is wearing red.;)
Let alone asking if someone overclocks or not, I mean how can that be relevant to giving advice.....

Probably too late, but anyway, I will also apologise, as posting on the forum when I'm having a bad day probably wasn't the best idea. :o
