I currently have an unlocked Athlon x3 and am looking for a cheap upgrade. Would it be worth going for the piledriver chip as I wont have to change motherboards, what's the performance difference going to be like? I have a HD7850 and 8GB RAM so I guess my CPU is the bottleneck, my main use is gaming.

Another +1 for the 6300 if the price is almost the same anyway .... Let's see what Monday brings.

FX-8350 £162 (up a little)
FX-8320 £120 (down £15)
FX-6300 £96 (down £10) Sold out, the last time i looked just a few days ago they had 10+ listed
FX-4300 £90 (down £10)

The FX-8320 and 6300 are a pretty good price now.

The FX-4300 could do with being at or sub £80, they would sell well at that price

There are two new cpu's coming out (tomorrow i believe). The FX6350 and FX 4350 which may account for the price drops. It does'nt look like OCUK's prices include the price drop, then again the retailer who posted about the price drop has only dropped the price on the FX6300 and FX8320 and only for a pre-order at the moment.

I just found an FX-6300 for £84, and dissagree if you like, the FX6300 is actually quite a good CPU, its not an Intel Core i5 3570K but still a very capable CPU in games or apps, and for £84, you would have to be crazy to snub it at that in the mid range.

I never said it was a poor cpu. I would take a 6300 over a Intel i3 anyday. With the 8320 available for only £114 i would take a serious look at that over the 3570k as well. Not that i am upgrading anytime soon.

The FX4350 and FX6350 are available now as well. The FX4350 (£99) is 4.2Ghz, 4.3Ghz turbo and has the cache boosted to 12mb. The FX6350 (£107.50) is 3.9Ghz, 4.2Ghz turbo with the same 14mb cache as the 6300.

Trinity has had price drops as well.
