Worth upgrading to Intel-Conroe from a A64 2x 4200?

Hi,

I would like to know whether I would see any real benefit by upgrading my system from an Athlon x2 4200 to an Intel-Conroe 6600 or 6700. My GFX is an ATI x1900xt and IMHO I dont see any reason to upgrade yet. I use my PC for Internet browsing and Office apps mainly Word. Mostly I play 3d games at 1280x1024 since that's my TFT's resolution. So what do you think?

Initially, I was very excited about Conroe, but have come to realise that for my use (high-res gaming - e.g. 1600x1200), even my current CPU is overpowered.

It would cost me ~ £300 to upgrade to a Conroe 6600 (after I sold my mobo, cpu and RAM), which interestingly, is the same cost as an X1900 master card.

For me, Crossfire would offer MUCH better performance increases than a Conroe.

Having said that, I really do enjoy overclocking, and gfx cards aren't as much fun as CPUs/Mobo/RAM :(

EDIT - Slightly overlooked the fact I'd need a new mobo for crossfire too :(

at that resolution conroe will best the X2, but at higher its bottlenecked by GFX just like the X2 would be, hitting a FPS wall if you well

I wouldn't bother. IMO, it's very unlikely that you're currently bottlenecking on your CPU. For the web and Office apps, your current CPU is probably at least 99.9% idle and it's fine for any current games. The Core 2 6600 or 6700 would be more powerful, but it would just be doing nothing faster.
