Im currently running 4gb (2x2gb) ocz reaper pc 6400 @844mhz, 5-5-5-18. Q6600 @3.8ghz, thinking of upgrading to a q9550 soon, which id be trying to oc to 4ghz ono. Would i be better changing my ram to pc8000/8500 or stick with my current kit and see how far i can oc it.

See how far you can push your current memory. That's something you can do now before you buy the Q9550.

It'll need to do 940mhz to keep up with a Q9550 at 4ghz.

As a matter of interest, why splash out on a pricey upgrade that isn't going to gain you much in performance? Just for the O/Cing practice? Surely your money would be better spent on saving up for an i7 rig, and get yourself a nice new keyboard/mouse or something for the shiny effect :D

Fancy something new to play about with:D. still deciding wether to change though, got a nice keyboard and mouse already and will be upgrading my video card to a gtx285, as my current gts doesnt cut the mustard at 1920x1200. Wouldnt consider i7 for maybe another year or so when the technology has matured a bit.:)

Also remember that most PC2-8500 isn't PC2-8500 at all - just 800MHz RAM with some overclocking headroom. I had 4GB of Ballistix 'PC2-8500' in my P35 board and could never get near to 1066Mhz. I just upgraded to 8GB and bought real Crucial PC2-8500 which works perfectly at 1066Mhz out of the box, albeit with slighty higher latency (and about £10 per module extra cost). However as the guys above say I doubt it would make much difference to your performance
