Currently got a DS3 board and a E6300 @ 3.33Ghz. Unfortunatly my board won't accept wolfdale's so I'd need to upgrade this also. Is it going to be worth the £150ish it'll cost me to upgrade after selling on my old kit?

I was thinking of picking up an X38 board secound hand for around £85 and then buying a new Wolfdale E8500. Hoping to get 4Ghz+

Worth the upgrade or not?

it depends what you want from it. Your current setup is plenty capable and I don't think you will find much of a difference in games unless you like benchmarking and playing with new toys.

Do the odd bit of benchmarking but mostly gaming, just wondering how much of a boost I would get (baring in mind the e6300 has less cache than the faster C2D also)? I'm thinking of also either going for the 4870x2 or getting a 4870 depending on price when they're released.

I would'nt bother. You have a perfectly good rig now. As Ben M says, Nehalem will be out in October and bring with it a new socket. Best to wait until then for a big upgrade.

Of course it is, but it's practically money out the windows unless you have a specific application for it, i have considered the same move and it just doesn't make sense to me. Nehalem will be out for mainstream usage in no more than at max 9 months, upgrade then and swing by a good Nehalem motherboard with some new and shining DDR3, now that is a proper upgrade.

I currently have an E6600 at stock and have just purchased an E8500 as I have noticed a few games maxing out the CPU and stuttering - however is this really worth the upgrade and will I notice a difference?

Not really interested in OC.

Just to add I have a GTX260 gfx card.

Well if you are not interested in overclocking then:

1) You should see a difference between the 2 processors
2) you should be slapped

Thanks :p

I've never found a straight forward guide on how to do it. I did try the AI *** app supplied with the ASUS MB but anything over 10% and the PC wouldnt boot.

Like everyone has said there is no NEED to upgrade.

But who cares about need, u WANT to upgrade.

£150 for at least 4Ghz.

Go for it, its only money!

You do not need to buy a new cpu. Get that E6600 clocked. Shame on you!! Why buy a new cpu when you have a perfectly good one already that will achieve a 40-50% overclock. Depending on motherboard of course. Just buy a decent cooler and get clocking. If i can do it anyone can.

I have a P5B MB - whats the highest I could expect from the E8500 with the stock cooler?

Not sure about your mobo but my E8400 hits 4.2Ghz 1.42v but i keep her at 4Ghz 1.3v.

Id imagine 4Ghz is the min u could expect.

While the P5B is a good board, the 965P chipset is not the best one for clocking Wolfdales. You may have been better sticking with the E6600, in which case i would have expected it to hit 3.2-3.6Ghz. The E8500 may get to 3.8Ghz if you are lucky which by comparison is not as good a overclock and certainly is'nt very good for a E8500. You will need to flash to the latest bios just to get the E8500 to work in that board. 965P was never designed to work with the 45nm Wolfdales and bios support varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. You may get lucky though.

I thought the 965p chipset held the WR score for highest clocked wolfy til only recently?

anyway I would give it a try anyway, people said the 965P chipset was terrible for clocking quads as well but it got mine to 4.05ghz benchable and 3.86ghz stable. Even got a B3 quad up to 3.8ghz when I put my radiator on the windowsill :)
